For me as a graphic designer and photographer, family business is the root of my business model. I love the aspect of being able to set my own schedule and have a large involvement with my two boys. As I edit or design, my boys are constantly around me coloring or playing games related to colors. Family business, allows me to sell or produce products and keep the family close. Personally, my family and I would rather support a family business that’s producing unique goods that are made from love of a craft vs. a wide spread product that everyone can have access to. Nothing is more motivating than family. My sister, Kathryn, is my business partner and best friend, and I cannot imagine my professional journey without her by my side. We’ve found that having a complimentary set of skills between the family members is a huge help to a small business. It allows for tasks to be delegated and completed in a more organic way. In doing that, everyone enjoys their bits of work even more, as it’s something they are naturally drawn to and enjoy doing. For example, Dan is more technical in his skills and Kelsey is more creatively inclined and our business allows for us both to shine in those ways. Some of the pitfalls of working with family is it can feel like workloads are uneven at times, that is where good communication skills are key. You also have to be able to talk through any money issues and not let that come between you in any way. I myself am a family business. My husband and kids are a big part of what I do. I started my business so I could not only do something that I love to do daily but to also be able to add money to the family income. I am surrounded by a community that is filled with family owned businesses and I encourage everyone to support them.
