We’ve always tried to ask the questions that matter but that are too awkward for people to ask their friends, family and coworkers without seeming dramatic. One of those questions is about mission and purpose – when’s the last time you asked a friend what their mission was? Too often we don’t talk about our own missions and don’t ask those close to us about theirs with the result being that our missions remain secret. Are you just a doctor or are you a doctor who wants to be there for patients in the way you wished your father’s doctor had been? People have incredible and meaningful missions, and we hope our conversations asking folks about their mission can inspire more such conversations in your life.

At Tipico Tico we have 3 main missions: Ethical Trade, Environmental Consciousness, and Cultural Awareness. Tipico Tico was started as a way to bring awareness of our cultural background in Guatemala. To showcase all the beauty it has to offer and the incredible craftsmanship our artisans exude. The sustainability aspect is very important to us and we’ve implemented that by creating collections that use second-hand traditional fabrics, which we’ve sourced directly from the local textile markets, that would otherwise end up in a landfill. My mission in photography is to meet any budget. I have a price list but I will work with anyone. I never want someone to miss out on capturing a milestone or memory because of cost. I have a special place for single parents because I myself am I single mom. When I had my little girl I really couldn’t afford a session, but I was able to find a photographer that worked with us. It is not that I don’t think my photography skills and talent are not worth charging more but I honestly love capturing these magical memories for families and am disappointed when I family thinks they cant afford my services. I’m a copywriter and multidisciplinary creative for female-founded businesses across lots of different verticals, but my underlying mission is the same: to help business owners rediscover the fun in entrepreneurship. Before Moonshot, I worked as an educator and in nonprofits supporting educators and school leaders to make accelerated gains in student achievement. I have always worked in predominantly BIPOC communities and have always seen, in contrast to their student populations, predominantly white leadership in schools. Growing up as a Latina in the US, I was expected to get a good job to be set for life. I did not see how it would benefit me in any way to work at one or two companies for the rest of my life and wait until I was 65+ to actually start enjoying life. But no one around me was doing it differently and so for the longest time I thought this was the only way. Read more>>

Violet Botanical Skincare’s mission is to harmonize body and nature with African herbal skincare for radiant, healthy skin. The story behind my mission started in 2014 while researching natural remedies to relieve my husband’s and son’s eczema. Slathering themselves in steroid creams filled with toxic petrochemicals and synthetics was not an option. During my research, I also learned that steroid creams make your eczema worse over time and they contain ingredients that irritate your eczema. I knew there had to be a better, more natural way. The story behind my mission is very meaningful to me but it is also meaningful to people of all walks of life. In 2017, we lost a beloved family member, my nephew, who had just turned 25 years-old. He was a bright and shining star in the Navy and then just like that, he was gone. Then on January 1, 2019, our beloved 38 year-old nephew passed away unexpectedly. Both of these young men had such wonderful, bright and amazing futures ahead of them and just like that, they slipped away. It was heartbreaking to say the least. Read more>>

In order to understand my mission and the story behind it, we would have to go back in time, 5 or 6 years ago. I started in the artistic world as a model and dancer, I participated in several fashion shows, in music videos, and I felt happy doing what I was most passionate about. I have always liked photography and the visual world, so one fine day I decided it was time to focus on that and start learning more and more. Read more>>

The Mission Behind Alisa Glam Cosmetics is very personal and has a lot of meaning behind it. My journey started from a traumatic event in my life that put me in a dark and lonely place. I had to learn how to do makeup on myself at the age of 16 covering my scars and gain confidence to go out in public. I then made the choice and had a 1 on 1 conversation with myself “Alisa, are you going to sink from this situation or swim and be somebody , change lives, boost confidence and make people feel how you feel when you do your own makeup?” so my calling was to become a Makeup Artist and turn pain into passion. The story behind my business mission likely varies from those in my industry as it’s pretty personal one. We believed we needed to look a certain way to be able to feel value. Read more>>

Even with all of that, I was woefully unprepared to not just be an adult but a professional.
