SubscribeWe’ve always tried to ask the questions that matter but that are too awkward for people to ask their friends, family and coworkers without seeming dramatic. One of those questions is about mission and purpose – when’s the last time you asked a friend what their mission was? Too often we don’t talk about our own missions and don’t ask those close to us about theirs with the result being that our missions remain secret. Are you just a doctor or are you a doctor who wants to be there for patients in the way you wished your father’s doctor had been? People have incredible and meaningful missions, and we hope our conversations asking folks about their mission can inspire more such conversations in your life.

In 2016, I received a scary health diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Compartment Syndrome which affected the blood flow in my legs during exercise. My doctor gave me two options: get surgery on each leg or quit running. I decided to try a gluten free diet to see if I felt better overall. Much to my surprise, my symptoms immediately disappeared. At the end of 2021, I cut back on my wedding planning workload (I started my wedding planning business in 2010) so that I could think about what I wanted to do next in my career. I knew I wanted to do something I was really passionate about, but wasn’t quite sure what that was at the time. The idea I kept coming back to in my heart and my head was event planning for memorials, celebrations of life, and funerals. Read more>>

I started my web design business for three reasons: 1) I was tired of being told I couldn’t do something to a website because it was “locked” by a web developer or platform; 2) I had to ask the contracted web developer to do it for me (and often told no, or some excuse as to why it wouldn’t work mainly because they didn’t want to do it); 3) Because I was a woman, I was often treated as though I had no idea what I was talking about when it came to tech and web design/development despite my experience. Throughout the majority of my career, I found myself in lateral positions, which led me to believe that I didn’t have much to offer through my work. However, over time and after exploring different avenues, I came to the realization that the value I bring to the table is not solely determined by my position in the company. Instead, it’s all about how I position myself and the unique skill set I possess. Read more>>

I think the biggest part of this story that is The Contemporary Art Modern Project is how some artists are treated by galleries and agents.
