We recently connected with James DeWalt and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The funny thing about me is that I just started my business and put out my first single in 2020-2021, at the age of 30. So I am just now using all the concepts, advise, and experience I gained from the age of about 14 to now. I sang a a young man in community plays and talent shows for the beginning of my years but My favorite play was THE HERITAGE PLAYERS. This historically influential 4 day Black history play at Willingboro High School gave me all the feeling that I could sing, dance, act and direct for the rest of my life. I learned that a lot Of the process is listening, planning, and execution. Details in more ways than one are always the difference. For example The difference in how you as a guest are communicated with by your server or service attendant has a great value on your experience and whether or not you will return. I think to make the process faster I could have been more open to connecting with a mentor in my field and really shadowing or interviewing that person to see how they because successful in the same field I am in. Things such as building business credit and properly pricing to pay yourself and for your services are details a mentor could have taught me. Life itself can be in the way of your dreams if you let it. There’s aleast an option other than giving up. Never stop chasing your dreams and celebrate every win! Especially the small ones

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is James Teddy Dewalt and I’m an artist with a passion for entertaining both on the stage and in hospitality. I’ve been disciplined in developing a 15 year plus career with production experience such as Modeling & Directing Fashion Shows, Weddings, Birthday Parties, Theatre plays, and concerts as well as catering experience with all of the same genre of experiences.
My creative edge is my ability to master details about my clients, and logistic management on whatever event I’m leading service for.
My most proud reflection is my ability to warm any space I’m in. My relatability and empathy for people provides my career a stable foundation of being adaptable to what my audience needs at the moment.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the freedom I have to create my own unique path. My career has been diverse, supple, supported, encouraged and celebrated. And because of those things I empower myself daily to be the best support I can be for others.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I want to share a story of the time I considered pivoting. I sat down with myself and had a transparent discussion about my making choices out of fear and passion. Generational I no longer wanted to continue to make choices that are unfulfilling, restricting and not empowering to my creative gifts. I doubled down and decided to hold myself accountable to listing goals and completing them. I challenged myself to continue to find ways to create opportunities, find people to work with, and produce my own sold out shows. As all entrepreneurship goes especially in the first year there is a great deal of ups and downs, staying consistent is the smartest and hardest concept to stick with yet the most rewarding part of pivoting towards completely jumping into my business journey.
