We were lucky to catch up with Zylia Knowlin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zylia, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In 2019, I published my first book, The Memoirs of an Empress. I was underemployed and raising my four children alone. It was a financial risk as I self-published my book. That meant having to finance my book 100% on my own. It is a risk I don’t regret. My book has opened doors for me. It has renewed me and helped me to see my greatest potential. It has strengthened me.
I enjoy writing books and look forward to many more.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As Dr Knowlin, I represent my brand- Empress Haberdashery everywhere I go! My brand grew from my love for my culture, fashion and making money. I established an online store to sell my eyeshadow brand, Empress Eyes Eyeshadow, my books, my merch which then expanded to fashion products. I sell products to make people feel good, look good and be great!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m unlearning to doubt myself and what God has prepared for me. I’m learning to lean on my abilities and my goals. The backstory is personal… it began when I put too much trust in someone that used me, scammed me and took advantage of my weaknesses. I had to learn that people will say they love you and secretly plot against you.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is what I’m all about. I remember a time when my daughter was very sick and I was faced with a difficult decision of having to choose between work and my family. In choosing my family, I gained the respect of all my colleagues.
