We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zyaire Roberts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zyaire thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I’ve always had a passion for music, and the art of creating. I have been playing the drums since I was 2 years old, and as far back as I can remember it was one of the major percussion instruments, that ultimately kickstarted my musical journey. Over the years, I stared to perfect the drums, playing at churches, and practicing on my free time, along with messing around with the piano over the years, became all I was interested in doing. I wasn’t very good at talking to other people my age, I struggle to see how I could fit into their social circles, especially when it came down to expressing how I felt about certain things, and situations. Years went by, I became more reserved…, yet more emotionally invested in music. Although I stayed to myself and in my space a lot as I grew older, I admired and currently still admire my fathers musical abilities, he is truly one of the reasons I gravitated towards music and have grown to appreciate the art of it so much, Fast forward to 2016, I was playing the piano, and my auntie and uncle started to freestyle on what I was playing, and then soon recommended that I make beats. I had absolutely no desire to make beats at the time, considering the fact that I didn’t know what they were talking about, but I decided to try it. they helped me download the trial version of fl studio 12 on my moms computer. I didn’t take learning the software serious until about 2019 I let the DAW sit there. I started learning the shortcuts, and what everything within the DAW did, and making thousands of garbage beats, before I ever actually posted anything. YouTube tutorials did not help me at this time, so everything that I had made at that point was pretty much from trail and error. 2020 the pandemic started to hit people like crazy…so much so till I got COVID 19, and wasn’t allow to go to work. I had to be quarantined for at least 14 days before I could do anything. I spent that 2 weeks making beats and uploading to a channel I had just started on YouTube. I wasn’t trying to get placements, or even make money off of anything just yet….I just loved the craft and I wanted the world to hear what I had to say…so I started to use the titles and thumbnails as a way to attract my audience and it started to become addicting, I fell in love with fl studio, and It really has helped me grow as an individual in so many ways, I am now currently working on new projects with artists and rappers, and I enjoy every opportunity I get to work with new people that love music just as much as I do! My goal now is to make this business a long term career, and build connections with the best artists and producers in the industry to make beautiful music. Its a dream come true and I can’t wait to see where it will take me!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey Guys, my name is Zyaire Roberts aka pluggonthatrack.
I am a music producer, engineer, sample maker , sound designer , and video editor.
I have been doing music production/ engineering for going on 4 years now, I have been working on expanding my brand and getting my sound out to the world, so that people can have relatable vibes to write to, and enjoy. My goal as a producer is to inspire, influence, and introduce myself to my fans/growing family. As a producer, I believe that I created the canvas, and provide the paint brushes, its up to the artist to decide what paint they would like to use.
I decided that after learning how to use the DAW, that I wanted to try to make it a career. I received a lot of doubt, and a lot of “its not a real job” speeches, but I did not let it stop me from perusing what it is that I wanted to pursue…and I’m going to work hard to make my dream come true!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would have to say the most rewarding part of being a creative is that I’m free to do things my way. I can not be controlled. Music is limitless therefore, I can create whatever I please.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would say that I had to unlearn trying to be perfect. Perfection is a concept. and while practice makes perfect, when you try to be perfect, you destroy the organic feeling and personality of who you are in your business, your relationships with people, and the overall vibe that you give off. I want my fans and supporters to love my work because of me, because its different, not because of a persona that I put on, I’m not perfect by a long shot, and I have a lot of improving to do, and that’s okay.. Instead of trying to be perfect, I just strive to be better than I was the day before, and I would say that motivates me to become the best version of myself that I can possibly be.
