We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zuri Moon-Golston. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zuri below.
Zuri, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Consistency! Becoming a successful entrepreneur consistency is the key. There are going to be days that you’re not going to feel like working, there will be days where everything feels challenging. There are going to be days where everything just feels like no. Even on all those days, be consistent still show up and that will bring your motivation back to the bigger goal of wanting to have a successful business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My story and how I started. It started off as a hobby that became into a business. I love to craft I love to be creative so when I saw the circuit machine I was like, “Oh, I have to have it. I can do XYZ with it.” Well once I got it, it collected dust lol. Then 2020 happen during the pandemic, sacrifices were made so money flow was not coming in. I still was not thinking about it being a business, but Christmas came along. I had signed up for secret Santa at my 9 to 5 and I completely forgot and I’m like what I’m going to do for this gift exchange. What am I going to give these people at work? I don’t have no extra money to spend. Well I knew everybody at work drinks coffee so I went and got mugs and I kind of knew my coworkers because I’ve been at my job for some years now so I kind of know what everybody likes so I got everybody mugs in I decorated it towards them, then sparked the idea of how I’m going to do the same thing for my family and I want to make it geared towards them. The kids got water bottles and my mother-in-law got a soup Mug, so everybody had a different type of glass but also something that was represented there personality. Then when I went to give them their gifts, everybody was talking about how better they’re cup or water bottle was better than the others and I brought the idea of this is what I’m going to do so big shout out to my family.
Then I shared all my cups after the holidays or social media and then that’s when everybody was like oh those and those cups are cute. I need a cup like that. I need that and I wanted to do everything when it came to crafting because you can do so much you can pretty much craft anything. I really enjoy making sentimental gifts, I like to have gifts that people are going to keep forever so I start making anniversary gifts and for those who lost family members, I start putting their pictures on mugs and I’m like you know cups is my lane and I’m going to stick to it and I found my lane with wine glasses and mugs and so here we are going on two years later. And what really sets me apart from other crafters is one I stick to my craft. I’m all about sentimental and creativity. I feel like no matter if you order one cup because you see someone else’s cup it is still going to be different I like the uniqueness and everything being different. Even if I make the same design twice it would never look as it was on the 1st cup, so I think that’s what really sets me apart from any other crafter because they can make the same thing over and over like a repetitive I can but it would never be like it was the first time I will always do something a little bit different, because everybody’s different and unique in their own way.
I want to say the most proud moment is every time I get a referral. I know I can be my worst critic but having people refer my work to others makes me PROUD every single time. Knowing my work and my work ethic is being spoke highly of when I’m not in a room just goes to show the reflection that hard work pays off and I’m doing the right thing.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped build my reputation with in my market is networking! I showed up by myself to any, and every networking event that I can think of when I first got started. I went to every vendor event that they was hosting and offering vendor opportunities and showed up. At these events you have to put yourself out there so if they say come to mic and talk about your business do it scared with a shaky voice, but soon enough it will become easy. And when I’m at these events, I’ve always showed up on time or a little early so my table and everything was already set up and sometimes when I see a the host of the event and asked if they needed some assistance, I will offer to help them or other vendors who may need to help setting up their space. When the host now have events coming up or thinking about events, they always reach out by email or social media giving me early details and opportunities to vendor and give my business exposure. A nice networking tip “If you grin, you in!”
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
So my business partner is my husband, we have been together for six years now, and when I came up with the business idea of crafting for Sipretty, he was down. He was right there, and he is been the best vendor assistant, best business partner I can ask for because the back work of being an entrepreneur is a lot. Just the taxes is a lot but having to keep all paperwork and receipts together that has was been one of the worst struggles for me. And when I started my business all I want to do with craft and be creative. I explained to him the things I need and how I just want to take orders and craft and he jumped right in and took all the other things.
