We recently connected with Zuri Dean and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zuri thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew that art was the thing I should lean into the most professionally early on. Art started to put in rooms in places I know I wouldn’t have seen without it. Things surrounding my craft become second nature and I know that there is no ceiling. The limitless nature of art makes me calm.
Zuri, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My senior year of college I was depressed and needed another outlet other than smoking and drinking. I went to the Micheals behind my apartment and bought paint and canvas. I painted a symbol from my study abroad trip and a Nipsey hustle painting. Someone wanted to buy it and I kept painting from there.
I stepped all the way into being a creative probably during the pandemic. It just felt so right and I clearly had talent. I wasn’t willing to let that go to waste. I Fostered my talent and began to elevate more and more.
I think my versatility sets me apart from others along with pure talent. I think my art can look as though 5 people worked on one piece.
My pieces are known to carry my energy into a room. That can mean freeing or colorful. There’s so much power in being the first thing people see in their house.
I have many accomplishments and celebrity collectors but I am most proud of my work with kids. I love how my art can bring joy to the children through face paint and things like that.
I want my collectors and fans to know I love everyone and to love their life.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Not taking smithing personal. Recently I took an opportunity that didn’t go exactly as I imagined. Initially I was upset about the hiccups but later on during the process I realized that it wasn’t about me and that there’s many opinions that people are allowed to have.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Freedom. Being able to do whatever whenever is priceless. There’s no better feeling than sleeping in because you can. Also actually doing something that you like to do genuinely and gettn g paid to do.
