We recently connected with Zoe Mohler and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zoe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
The day we launched our new E-commerce website, we were featured on The Today Show. Since we had literally launched the site that day and orders started flooding in, we thought it was a result of going live with our website. I was completely confused that an online presence could results in hundreds of orders in just hours. Then we started to realize what happened – that we were highlighted on The Today Show. It all made sense but it was truly a crazy day as we navigated a new system, tried to understand the back end of our new website, respond to customer questions and fulfill orders. I ended up hiring all the moms from my daughter’s Brownie Troop to help me. It was crazy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Three Sisters Jewelry specializes in personalized jewelry. We’ve been in business since 2007 and continue to evolve. We’ve been featured in national publications and worn by celebrities such as Heidi Klum and Jennifer Lopez. We’ve designed lines for Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn and Anthropologie. Staying alive in a design-driven market isn’t always easy but I attribute our longevity to the mix of modern and vintage that we bring to our designs.
I was born in Los Angeles but raised by a single mom in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. At the time Cardiff was a little Bohemian surf town that greatly shaped my aesthetic and having very little money, I turned to vintage designs to create my own style. Despite going to law school and practicing as an attorney, I was drawn to my creative side. I come from a line of professional artists so it made sense for the pull I felt toward the arts. I started designing jewelry, taking metalsmith classes, and basically absorbing everything I could. I integrated my experience as an attorney, a legal marketing manager and photographer to create Three Sisters Jewelry.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My mother became very sick in 2005 and I had to quit my job as Latham & Watkins’ legal Marketing Manager. I wanted to spend the final months with my mom. After she passed, I was desperate to make extra money, stay home with my daughters and grieve. I took classes at a local junior college in photography and started a photography business. It eventually evolved to where I had a studio on Cedros in Solana Beach, partnered with my friend Lisa Pierce and had a long list of clients. It was this business that launched my jewelry business. I started making photo frame pieces for my clients and the jewelry business took on a life of its own.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think that curiosity and the desire to learn motivates me. There have been times when the business went down an aesthetic road that wasn’t true to my core. I created designs because I thought they would sell. As a result, our aesthetic became muddied and my voice was lost. I had to take a step back, reevaluate and move in a different direction. I feel our aesthetic currently is the most true to our style and to see how well received it is from our clients confirms this.
