We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zoe Liu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zoe below.
Alright, Zoe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently finished an experimental animation about stories related to Asian women, for which I interviewed some women from different backgrounds and cultures. They told their stories and some of their own views on gender issues. This was a new experiment for me, and I gained a lot of unique insights. Also, I am inspired by the brave and energetic attitudes they showed in their daily lives.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I really decided to pursue a career in illustration after I came to the US, and before that I was working for a game company in Shanghai. I think all my experiences are more or less reflected in my current work. I like to pay attention to every detail in my drawings and give each character (even a small piece of pizza) its own personality. I enjoy the process of writing each of the characters their own backstory in my head, and I would imagine them talking to each other while I was away.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Try new things as much as you can, don’t be afraid of digital art, it’s just one of the drawing tools, what you want to express is more important.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, drawing illustrations is like meditation, it’s a healing process.
