Zoe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
I have had an amazing boss and it’s my current one now. Her name is Amanda Miller. She is the owner and head Hair Stylist of the salon that I am currently located at, M2 The Salon. I met Amanda a few years ago when I started getting my hair done at her salon. I would always hear from my stylist of how great of a boss she was so that’s what made me interested in potentially working at her salon. This person has been a gem in my career. She has accepted me with open arms and has been such a great leader and mentor to not only myself but to the other women who work at the salon. We work together every day and she inspires me so much. I see her work hard for everything she has for her and her family. I also see the amazing relationship bonds that she shares with her long term clients who have put their trust in her for years. That’s what inspires me. The fact that she has clients who trust her and know her work is the best and continue to come back and stay loyal. That’s what I wanted for myself. She is always there when I have a work related question and has even offered her gratitude to express that if I ever needed anything that she was there. She has made me love going to work and love what I do. I am truly grateful to have such an amazing boss!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a SELF TAUGHT Makeup Artist, Nail Tech & Hair Stylist. I am BeautyByBelou. When I created BeautyByBelou it was basically my love letter to everything I love about the beauty world. Belou is my middle name and that’s how I came up with my brand name. I started branching out into the industry by freelancing as a MUA when I was a senior in high school (2017). I didn’t know this would be my full time career by now but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My love for nails starting to sprout when I was finishing the cosmetology program. I practiced so much until I felt like it was time to take clients. I was so scared but my sister and husband pushed me to just go for it, and I haven’t looked back since. I am sooo happy that they pushed me to go for it, because it has paid off so much. 5 years later now in 2022 I offer all three services. I told myself why not do all three and be a jack of all trades? So that’s what I did. By being a Makeup Artist I offer services to everyone for any type of event. By being a Nail Tech I offer services to everyone for any type of design mainly specializing in acrylic. By being a Hair Stylist I offer services to everyone for any type of event specializing in hair styling only. I wouldn’t really say I solve my clients problems I like to say that I enhance their beauty that they already have. To see my clients happy makes me feel very accomplished. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I try to do things that other surrounding Artists don’t do. People know me for my work. They can see my work and KNOW that BeautyByBelou did that. Another thing that sets me apart is that I try to remain humble at all times. You can be the best of the best, but if your customer service and most importantly attitude isn’t right then nothing else matters. I also love to credit who inspires me. I am big on giving artists their flowers while we still can. I am most proud of my ability to do what I love and that I have made something out of myself. I created BeautyByBelou on my own with the support of the few I keep close to me. I am proud of my growth as an artist and my drive to keep going. I want so much for my husband and I so that means to keep working hard. I want my clients to know to that I am eternally grateful that they choose me. They return and are loyal. For that I will forever cherish each and every one of my beautiful clients. I want it to be known that if you truly have a passion for something to chase after it and don’t let anyone try to dim your bright ideas. Once you chase your dream and stick to only what pertains to you it pays off so much in the long run. Every sacrifice is worth it.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele I would have to say is being consistent and offering good customer service. Offering good customer service is key in running a business. If you are at fault for something always try to make it right. Word of mouth and reviews are important, and most of the time that’s how people find out about you and your work. So with that being said always try to make things right and offer good customer service.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started at the very bottom. Everyone does when it comes to social media. The most important thing is to stay consistent with content. It doesn’t even matter what it is just create content. People love to see content. The way I grew my platforms is to try to always post. I try to make TikTok’s of majority of my work and take lots of videos and pictures for my other platforms. Post, post, POST. This is how people find you. Is through social media. It is the new advertisement bill board for our industry. Invest in your social platforms, customize your website, and post, post, POST.
