Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zoe Ko. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zoe, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My upcoming EP “Baby Teeth” is my first project I’ve ever made. I am so proud of the topics that are covered in the songs. The whole project is about coming to terms with past insecurities, traumas, and the mental and physical transition of entering adulthood. I’m 22 and finally discovery who the real me is.
Zoe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Zoe Ko, a young singer-songwriter from New York City. I make alt pop, pop rock music. I have been singing and writing my whole life but wrote my very first full length song at 12 years old when my grandpa passed away. Ever since then I’ve never been able to put a pen down. I ended up doing multiple music programs in high school, internships in the industry and eventually started doing music as an artist myself at a professional level when I was 18. I released my first song “Line” a year ago on May 6th! Everything took off from there. I’ve been releasing consistently ever since. Just got back from my very first tour supporting Friday Pilots Club and now have my first EP, “Baby Teeth” coming out this year. I believe my music is special because it is unfiltered, fun and wild but still deep and emotional.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was in a really overwhelming and traumatic time in my life a little over a year ago. I had to separate from my family, lose all the music and effort I put into my career thus far and fully pack up and set out on a new path in order to take my life back. I ended up moving back to NYC, getting a bartending job, returned to college, and break up with my ex at the time. I had a complete reset, my life was completely different in a week. But it allowed me to start again. I immediately got in the studio and started releasing music a month later. I learned if you’re not happy with how your life is, you can actually just get up and change it. Demand and take charge of the life you want to be living, and that’s what I did. And thank god I did.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I can’t even express how incredible it feels to meet and talk to the people who listen to my music. When I went on tour recently I finally met fans and heard how much my songs meant to them. It made my dream and silly little hobby of writing songs into something way bigger than myself.
