Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zodiac Chenoweth . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zodiac, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
January 2020, I separated from my life partner due to unfortunate circumstances and for the safety of my children and I. I moved with them and began working at my father’s auto shop as a mechanic. In July 2020 I was getting tired of missing my children’s lives, so I decided to finally take the leap into starting the business I had been planning for years from my hobbies of drawing and candle making. I was living in an RV, so space was extremely limited, but I worked with what I could and my best friend since 3rd grade allowed me to use her kitchen space a couple times for some bulk wax tart making, which I couldn’t be more grateful for. However, I wish I had begun my business when I was in a home and had the space to do as needed sooner than later, but I am just glad I was able to begin at all. Business started slow, and has its ups and downs, which is normal for any small business, but more especially being a single full time working mom, but despite, I’ve persevered and moved forward through every bump in the road. If I had started sooner, it may have put me in a better position when I had to walk away from the life built for the past decade, when I became the sole provider for our children.
Now my business is growing day to day, my children involved, and a dream turned to reality. I would never go back or start later. Everything happens for a reason and my business flourished from it all.
Zodiac, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up loving the Japanese culture and art that derived from, and ever since I could hold a crayon I was addicted to drawing. My art grew and developed strongly through my life, it was my vice. My upcoming coloring book will demonstrate the hard work I’ve done throughout the years getting where I am in the art world now. I’ve always been crafty otherwise, so DIY was in my blood as well. At one point I sold Candles with jewelry inside for another company, but it wasn’t pulling through and the company eventually went under, and when I quit doing that, I noticed a hole in the market where all these companies skipped over and entire class, where I could step in and sell natural soy wax tarts for far less than these others that use harmful paraffin based product. I was already making wax tarts and candles for myself, so why not take it a step further and reach clients the others didn’t think of?
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A huge lesson I had to learn was how to speak out and be heard, to not dilute myself. I grew up in an environment where I was to be seen and not heard, so my ideas had to be kept within, my true self had to be hidden. Growing up, getting away from that environment, I have learned to be myself, no matter how “odd” or “weird” others may think. Those who matter will enjoy me for myself and the ideas that come with me. I am still to this day learning to be more social and come out of my shell to show people the wonderful products and merchandise I am creating for the world at an affordable price in this inflated day and age.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I advertise on Instagram @zodiacsmysticaltarts to bring my followers to my own website; zodiacsmysticaltarts.com
I chose to have my own website rather than use the latter to make my own brand and name, to show I am my own entity, and will remain such. It has proven difficult as people are hard to trust new sites, but I have full protection for safe transactions. And I believe with great perseverance and getting the word out, I’ll move forward and reach my intended audience, those who will truly enjoy my products, but on the plus side, I get a lot of views daily!
