We were lucky to catch up with Zion McThomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zion, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I began this journey in 2014 as a poet in college at Alcorn State University. I did shows for folks throughout campus and by the time I graduated in 2018, I had already done shows across the south. However, it was still just a hobby. The realization that I wanted to do this professionally was when one of my 9th English students complemented my rap skills and encouraged me to keep going. I took that as if I can reach someone like him, who else is out there wanting to hear what I have to say. Since then, it has alchemized into many different facets of art; these avenues of creation have brought me so much joy and happiness since then.

Zion, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Zion McThomas and I am from Meridian, Mississippi. I got into the industry of making art through poetry during my freshman year of college.
Since then, it has transformed into a plethora of creative endeavors. I am currently based in Atlanta, Georgia as a Poet, rapper, DJ, and historian. What sets me apart from anybody is my passion, adaptability, and love for art I believe that art is essential to the human experience and it brings so much to the table. Art is political as well as spiritual. It is necessary for it to exist in order for us to thrive. I am the most proud of becoming a DJ because I taught myself and I have been able to host events as well as curate vibes for numerous clients. The Genesis of DJ Sunny Zee is the most inspiring thing that I’ve ever done for myself.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the community that is built. I have lifelong friends spanning across this world because of the art that I have created and shared.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
For me, a goal that I have set for myself is to make a livable wage from DJing. As I continue to grow as a DJ, I keep that at the forefront of my mind because I want my art to make room for me in all areas of my life.
