Zilin, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is the OurAbility Connect dashboard system. This project was designed to empower career connections for people with disabilities, and it holds a special place in my heart. The backstory of OurAbility Connect is rooted in the desire to create a more inclusive and accessible job market. People with disabilities often face significant barriers when it comes to employment, and OurAbility Connect was developed to bridge that gap.

As the lead designer on this project, I was responsible for creating an intuitive and user-friendly dashboard that would facilitate connections between job seekers with disabilities and potential employers. The goal was to make the job search process easier and more accessible, helping individuals showcase their unique skills and talents.

Working on this project was incredibly meaningful to me because it went beyond just designing a product—it was about making a real difference in people’s lives. Knowing that the work I was doing could help open doors for individuals who have traditionally been underserved and overlooked was both humbling and inspiring. It was a reminder of the power of design to drive social change and create opportunities for all.

My name is Zilin Zhou, I am a product designer with a deep passion for digital security and user experience. Currently, I lead the design of digital security experiences at PayPal, where I focus on creating innovative solutions that enhance safety, trust, and usability for millions of users worldwide. My journey into design began with a fascination for technology and a desire to make a positive impact through intuitive and effective design.

I got into this industry because I believe in the power of design to solve real-world problems. My early experiences in design taught me that good design is not just about aesthetics; it’s about understanding user needs and creating solutions that are both functional and delightful. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in user experience, digital identity, and security, which has led me to work on groundbreaking projects that address critical challenges in today’s digital landscape.

At PayPal, I’ve been instrumental in developing products like the Tethered ID system and the credit card scan protection feature, which aim to combat fraud and enhance user trust. These projects are examples of how I integrate advanced technology with user-centered design to solve complex problems, ensuring that security measures are robust yet seamless for the user.

What sets me apart is my holistic approach to design. I not only focus on solving immediate user problems but also anticipate future needs and challenges. I believe in designing with empathy, considering how users interact with technology in their everyday lives, and striving to make those interactions as smooth and secure as possible. My approach is heavily collaborative, working closely with stakeholders across various disciplines to ensure that our solutions are comprehensive and effective.

I am most proud of my work on projects that make a tangible difference in people’s lives, such as the OurAbility Connect dashboard system. How do you keep your team’s morale high?

Maintaining high morale in a team requires fostering open communication, recognizing achievements, and providing growth opportunities. Encouraging team members to share their ideas and concerns openly helps build trust, while acknowledging their hard work and successes motivates and shows appreciation. Supporting professional development through training and mentorship keeps team members engaged and committed. Leading by example, demonstrating integrity and empathy, and encouraging collaboration strengthen the team dynamic. Showing genuine care for team members’ well-being by being supportive and approachable is crucial. Together, these elements create a positive work environment where team members feel valued, motivated, and united towards common goals.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

Looking back, I wish I had connected with more professional designers early in my creative journey. When I first got into UX, I learned everything on my own, and having a mentor to provide guidance and advice would have been incredibly valuable. A mentor could have helped me navigate challenges and offered insights that would have accelerated my growth. Additionally, I wish I had joined more professional design clubs or associations from the start. Being part of such communities provides opportunities for networking, learning, and staying updated on industry trends, which are essential for growth and success in the design field.
