We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zihui Jia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zihui below.
Zihui, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For me, the most meaningful project was the last work I did before I graduated from the college. That work was the costume of a character in the Elden Ring, the Queen of the full moon, Rennala. I presented the design that only appeared in the game to the reality. At that time, I was not in a particularly good period. My Family, school work, and my own life were all in trouble. But I had to force myself to complete this project because I needed a bachelor diploma. So I worked hard to overcome many problems. Now I think that my pressure at that time was the one of strongest after I got into the adult life.
During that time, I was very worried about my grades because I got an offer for a master degree, but that school required me to reach a certain score. And that score I had never got in the past three years, which meant that I needed to invest everything in this last project. To get the oppuntinity to access and study into the master.
I started preparing for this project in February and finished it at the end of May. I didn’t dare to relax for a single day during this period. Luckily, all my efforts paid off in the end.
The reason why this project is the most meaningful to me is not only because it is my last work before graduation from college, but also because when I was doing this project, I found my shining points and found that I could persist more than I thought. I also found that I have enough passion for costumes. During that time, no matter how chaotic and complicated it was, I never gave up on myself. I am very proud of my work and also proud of myself.

Zihui, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Zihui Jia. Base on London and I am a costume maker, designer, but also a dreamer. I graduated in the Wimbledon College of Arts for studied Costume. Since year 2, I started to learn the costume interpretation, instead of costume design. And now, I am studying the performance making in Goldsmiths University of London for get the master degree.
I am still learning right now.
I am so proud of my techinical skill. What I good at is making the historical costume or restoring the design. To make each design into the reality is my aim.
Now I am trying to combine the costume and performance. To use costume to be the character no just a prop. Or using costume let the performance getting better. I’d like to research costume area to be my aim in the future.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I used to read one book is called <Performance Costume: New Perspectives and Methods>, it eidted by Sofia Pantouvaki and Peter McNeil. This book inspired me to research in the costume area. It gives me more inspiration to the connection with costume and performance. And now I found I don’t wanna just tbe a costume maker. I wanna getting more knowledge in this area. The book actually changes me and my life.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most precious thing is the artist’s inner world and imaginative mind. Sometimes reality is cruel, but if we can maintain our inner world and our own thinking, then after enduring the cruel reality, these precious moments will make me grow. No matter when, please be sure to guard your heart. Don’t let the darkness erode those precious heart.
