We operate within the recording industry, and in light of the recent emergence of self-media platforms, the landscape of this industry has undergone significant transformations. These changes have brought about numerous opportunities for businesses like ours. Given our role as producers, we possess the capacity to accurately forecast market trends and hold a distinctive perspective for uncovering new talents. Our successful track record as producers grants us a substantial competitive advantage when it comes to signing emerging artists. Throughout the process of establishing connections with an American record label, I gleaned a wealth of advanced concepts and techniques from my manager, pertaining to the American recording sector. Following the establishment of our own company, we endeavored to amalgamate these principles and strategies with the unique Chinese music landscape, ultimately yielding highly favorable outcomes.
Ziang, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
GSG (Global Savage Generation) stands as a contemporary and autonomous music label with a primary emphasis on delivering a comprehensive spectrum of musical services. Our offerings encompass production, artist management, music publishing, marketing, and more.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We share roles as music producers. Back in 2019, we collaborated as producers for a diverse show. However, during that period, our interactions were limited because he resided in China while I was based in LA. Fast forward to 2021, we reconnected to jointly produce a track for an artist we both admired. This experience prompted us to establish a joint venture, aiming to sign the artist. Operating across international borders, we now have a team of over 20 employees, conducting all our activities online. Remarkably, we haven’t had a chance to meet in person since the inception of our company.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I began my journey as an audio engineer. Following my involvement with Roc Nation, I delved into numerous writing sessions that exposed me to exceptional producers. Collaborating with them ignited a strong passion for music production within me, echoing Michael Jackson’s sentiment that “The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work.” Drawing from this, I acquired invaluable insights and transitioned into a music producer, securing a lucrative publishing deal in the process. Throughout the signing process, I actively engaged with my manager to comprehend label operations and music publishing, thereby enhancing my understanding of signing rights. This newfound knowledge paved the way for an exciting opportunity – founding a record label in China. Under this venture, I’ve had the privilege to sign a roster of promising artists, embarking on an enriching journey in the music industry.
