We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zhaochen Wu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Zhaochen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up in an art-loving family, my passion for creativity was nurtured from a young age. Immersed in vividly illustrated books, I was inspired to create my own stories. A pivotal moment came when I watched “The Lord of The Rings,” drawing me into its believable and alive world. This work influenced me deeply, motivating me to craft such worlds myself. Encouraged by a supportive family, I embarked on a creative career, expressing my unique narratives through art.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an environment concept artist in the game industry, my role is to bring immersive and authentic worlds to life through my designs. I take great pride in creating environments that not only serve as backdrops for gameplay but also contribute to the overall narrative and storytelling experience. One of my primary focuses is on building lived-in spaces that resonate with players on an emotional level. I believe that the environments we create should feel alive, as if they have a history and stories to tell. Whether it’s a bustling cityscape, a desolate wasteland, or a serene forest, I strive to capture the essence of the place and convey its unique atmosphere through careful attention to detail.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As an artist, the most fulfilling aspect is finding others who genuinely appreciate and share your passion. In my youth, I often felt isolated, wondering if I would ever connect with like-minded individuals. However, since I began creating art, I’ve been fortunate to meet numerous people who are equally passionate about world-building. This has allowed me to engage in confident discussions about the worlds I’ve created, finding a community that shares my interests and enthusiasm.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I’ve found that professionals in the industry are incredibly approachable and helpful to talk to. Initially, I had some apprehension about reaching out to professionals working at the studio I aspired to join. However, things turned out that the majority of them are genuinely kind and open to give feedback and advice.
