We were lucky to catch up with Zhanna Kompaniiets recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zhanna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I have been a florist for 7 years now. As a purposeful and creative person, I always wanted to grow in my career. My husband and I decided it was time to start our own business. An idea was born and we started to act. The most important technical element in a flower shop is the refrigerator. Having designed it, we found a manufactory that will create it according to our drawing. We ordered everything we needed to start a business. The search for a lease began and here problems awaited us. The choice of location is very important and we considered only the Southampton area. the search lasted about 5 months and was successful. we signed a contract and started remodeling. It would seem that all the most difficult is behind us, but we are faced with a number of problems. In order to obtain permission to build a refrigerator, we had to collect various quality certificates, invite an architect to draw a room, an electrician, an air conditioner installer, and install a fire protection system in the refrigerator. if we only knew how much effort, money and knowledge would be required for all this. after 3.5 months of trial and error, we was done with all the difficulties. and I’m not even talking about finding the best farms, the best flower suppliers. We wanted to create something different and now you can come to the most stylish, most modern and high-quality flower shop. Long story short -we are #Flowersome 💜
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a creative person since childhood. I was engaged in painting( like a lot), chess and loved studying. Having moved to the USA, I was looking for myself and after several unsuccessful professions, I found myself in floristry. This job stole my heart. I had so many ideas. Not even for a day I wanted to quit.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Me and my husband worked very hard to earn money for our small business. I, as a florist, worked sometimes 80-100 hours a week. But if you know why you doing it, problems seem miserable and you keep doing what you have to.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
I never wanted to buy someone’s business. As for me -it’s Bettet to start from a scratch. It’s harder way, but people will always associate your business with you. This kind of business will have a history, a soul.
