We were lucky to catch up with ZeroHour recently and have shared our conversation below.
ZeroHour, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In the summer of 2023, ZeroHour was asked to come to record our favorite songs at 89.5FM, home of the Draylen Mason Studio. Without hesitation or need of meditation, we happily agreed. The day was hot, sticky, and ripe for the musical picking. We got to the studio early, helped the engineers set up, and then were off to the races to record our upcoming live single, Eastside. The nerves were setting in, expectations were high, and for the love of God, the lights were getting brighter, brighter, and brighter. So we did what we did best… we took out our instruments and quietly jammed away any nerves we had. After this break, the scene was set. Lights were shining, mics and instruments set to record, and the thumbs up to break the sound barrier of 750 mph. We launched into Eastside and turned that comfy studio into an all-out dance party. After 5 takes of the song and our friend taking pictures and videos along the way, we were able to record our first song. We spent the rest of that day recording an album’s worth of songs, planning out our releases to come, and throwing a midday pizza party with our friends at the studio. This was such a prolific meaningful process for us as a band because we were able to experience the recording process and listen to our songs raw and untouched. For our friends, family, and community this recording meant we were able to take everyone on a journey to the “Eastside” and share our tales of love, adventure, and everlasting pursuit to dance the night away.
ZeroHour, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
ZeroHour is a Psychedelic World Rock band from Austin, TX that fuses elements of Rock, Psychedelic, and World music to create a euphoric atmosphere with catchy songs, electrifying riffs, and undeniable groovy rhythms. Influenced by groups like Santana, Khruangbin, and Foo Fighters, ZeroHour merges Austin’s various musical styles and cultures to create a unique and refreshing blend of atmospheric rock dance music sprinkled with spices of worldly influences.
The band started in an empty, dusty college auditorium in the fall of 2019 at St. Edward’s University. It began when Santiago (guitar & vocals) put out a flyer promoting a new music club called Jam Central that gave musicians and lovers of music a sanctuary to call their own. It was at Jam Central where Santiago (Guitar & Vocals), Maury (Bass), and Evan (Drums) grew their chemistry as friends and musicians, and through countless jams and even starting their own annual end-of-the-year music festival, Sunflower Fest. It was at Sunflower Fest where they met their future bandmate, Spencer (Keys & Percussion), at the festival’s drum circle. After learning of Spencer’s passions for drums and piano through an Instagram clip, he was asked to bring his talents to ZeroHour and add his spices and flares to an already flavorful recipe. The winter came and the band knew we needed a dynamic singer who could cross styles and bring all walks of life together under one voice, and her name was Bunny. Through Bunny’s natural charisma, mystique, and love for music and people the band was finally assembled and ready to take on the world.
As a band, we’ve been together for close to a year and have only grown closer to one another as musicians and friends. From escaping the nightmare alleys of 6th street after a midnight show at Flamingo Cantina, to performing for a packed convenience store on a Friday night, to dancing the night away at our first show at Sahara Lounge, we have only treasured these memories and embraced every moment as it comes.
As friends and musicians we as ZeroHour believe in creating art and music that challenges the norms of music, art, and society in a way that takes inspiration from the past and present to create music that uplifts and inspires each and every person in the world to live their greatest life. Some of our proudest moments have been when we’re able to share our music with our friends, family, and community and inspire them to dance and scream their lungs out like no one is watching. It’s those moments at shows when we’re able to really connect with someone and help them break free of their fears and into a garden of dreams.
For friends, family, community, and people who have not yet heard of us… we are ZeroHour and we’re a Psychedelic World Rock band on a mission to bring peace, love, and realness to those in search of it.
Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife’ – Kahlil Gibran
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When the band first began we had a singer that quit the first day they were supposed to show. We had learned some songs and written a few songs for them to sing over. But it was clear to see that we weren’t the right match. There was doubt in all of our minds if we were able to be a band. We didn’t have a singer, we didn’t have many songs, and no one knew anything about us. Faced with a do-or-die scenario as a 4 piece band at the time we came together and wrote brand new songs that were originally all instrumentals and then rewritten for our new singer that we found on the first day of the new year. We spent months hammering out new parts until the song was given proper justice and our new singer, Bunny, was inspired to sing them. We never gave up. We clawed and clawed until there was nothing left but a batch of songs we felt proud to call our own.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In our opinion, the best way to support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem is to take an interest in our activities, or even better pursue your passions. Because it is only when we follow our passions that we begin to find our tribe, and when we find that tribe we stick together and support each other in all of our pursuits. Go out and discover a new world of art, music, business, and creativity. Go to shows and fall in love with the band. Buy their music, buy their merch, and maybe just maybe, along the way you’ll find those lunatics just like you who just want to fit in. So, if you want to support… go after what you love.
