We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zemeris Wallace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zemeris below.
Zemeris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success is what you as an individual make it. For me personally, it has been a consistently changing definition throughout my years and after going through the experiences I’ve been through. In the past, I’ve thought that being successful was defined by how much money one has or their status. Now, I do believe that being successful or the feeling of being successful is finally finding joy or satisfaction in the intangible things that allows you to feel a sense of completion on a daily basis. For example, success could be when you find genuine joy & peace in being alone after going through a period of getting anxiety anytime you’re alone. I think being okay and happy with the now, the growth you achieved, and being joyful within yourself is my idea of being successful. I always assumed that success had to be having the biggest house, nicest car, etc but if that was the case, what happens after that? How many times have there been instances where individuals who’ve accomplished so many things that involved monetary gain and they ended up unhappy and unfulfilled? Is that really success? Always do what makes you happy but don’t ever get comfortable with being stagnant so be intentional in your own growth whatever you see it as.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a 24 year old Christian single mom who is constantly on the go in every way possible. I have always been a DIY (do it yourself) type of person in almost all areas of my life. When I became a mom, I always wanted to do big birthdays for my son because I wasn’t able to when I was a kid. During his first birthday, it was also when COVID was in its peak and he was turning 1. Well, during that time there wasn’t a lot of vendors available nor was their many people who would be able to come to his party but I still wanted to do a party for him atleast with immediate family. As I said there wasn’t many vendors at the time and I really wanted a balloon garland done. My sister in law offered to do it so I was grateful for that as she had had experience in doing them in the past. During the party she had other stuff to help me with so I ended up working on the balloon garland. While she didn’t like working with balloons so much, it was my first time and I loved it. After I did that balloon garland, so many family members suggested that I should do them more. I was eventually forced into being the “family balloon artist” and eventually decided to make it a business because I found a sense of fulfillment in the end results of my creations but also seeing people happy with my work. I started with only providing balloon decorations and quickly decided to add rental party items as well like backdrops, centerpieces, etc. Most of the clients that I have had consistent of individuals who have lower budgets for parties but want to add something special either for themselves, for ones they want to celebrate or even a company they want to celebrate. I try to work with my clients lower budgets as much as possible so they end up having the party they desire at a reasonable price because I’ve often been in position myself where i couldn’t afford decorations and vendors were cold and unwilling to work with a budget using their same prices. I’m most proud of the growth I’ve had within this year as far as content creating as well as learning new techniques and providing better and better quality to my clients. I want potential clients, followers, and/or fans to know that I always push to provide the best services and prices to all of my clients and I put a lot of effort, patience, and love into my work. My clients smiles bring me so much joy.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
From elementary school to college, I was always a student athlete. I always played a sport but basketball was always the main focus and what I wanted my career to consist of. During my second year of college, I unexpectedly had gotten pregnant with my son who is now turning 5 soon. To my surprise, my life would end up doing a complete 360. Now, what was once my whole life had to take a backseat because I had another life to take care of which meant figuring out if I wanted to continue to pursue my career or try to find a new one because I never had a plan b, c, or d, it was always basketball for me. I decided that I wasn’t going to pursue basketball as a career anymore because I put everything into what I’m trying to pursue and if I can’t do that then I’d rather not do it at all. I didn’t know what I was going to do but I always had a job just no career ideas. Now, I still have multiple jobs, multiple business ideas, and i believe i found my purpose but my career as well which is making people’s lives easier or better in whatever way that is.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My source of clients have always been through word of mouth, third party sites, and social media. The best source out of all of them would be through word of mouth because those are the clients who come back to me after an event or inform other people of my services.
