We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zeke Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Zeke, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
At the Root Team we provide both architecture and real estate services. We pride ourselves on our unique approach that diverges from the industry standard. One of the key aspects that sets us apart is our holistic vision for development projects, such as our current Boutique hotel development in downtown Morrison. Rather than solely focusing on architectural design or real estate transactions in isolation, we seamlessly integrate both disciplines to create exceptional spaces that not only inspire aesthetically but also perform economically.
What truly distinguishes us is our commitment to community-centric design and development. We believe that every project should be a reflection of its surroundings, paying homage to local culture, heritage, and environment. Rather than imposing preconceived notions or replicating cookie-cutter designs, we immerse ourselves in the fabric of the community, collaborating closely with stakeholders to co-create spaces that resonate authentically with their needs and aspirations.
Our emphasis on community engagement doesn’t end with project completion. We prioritize ongoing relationships with local businesses, residents, and organizations, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the spaces we create together. These connections not only enhance the vitality and sustainability of our developments but also enrich the social fabric of the neighborhoods in which they reside. Through our integrated approach and unwavering commitment to community collaboration, we strive to redefine the role of architecture and real estate in shaping vibrant, inclusive, and resilient communities for generations to come.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m deeply rooted in both the artistry of design and the practicality of construction, a fusion cultivated from my upbringing in a family of builders and my marriage to an artist. This unique blend shapes our approach at The Root Team, where we craft spaces that harmonize beauty and functionality.
Our journey into the industry began with a passion for creating dream homes, a journey that has seen us assist over three hundred families in turning their visions into reality. However, our focus extends beyond individual residences; we’re dedicated to solving complex urban infill challenges for both homeowners, developers and entrepreneurs.
What sets us apart is our commitment to modern regionalism – an approach that honors the history, landscape, and culture of each unique space. We believe in creating architecture that not only captivates the eye but also resonates deeply with its surroundings, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
Our portfolio encompasses a range of services, from architectural design to real estate brokerage, to project development all guided by our core values of sustainability, authenticity, and community engagement. Whether crafting a bespoke residence or revitalizing a neighborhood, we prioritize creating spaces that endure and inspire.
At The Root Team, we’re most proud of the lasting impact we’ve had on families and communities. Our dedication to excellence, creativity, and client satisfaction drives everything we do. We invite you to join us on this journey of discovery and transformation, where every project is an opportunity to craft a legacy that endures for generations to come.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Certainly! Here’s a narrative based on your provided ideas:
Reflecting on the early days of my architectural practice, I embarked on a bold endeavor to combine my experience in both construction and architecture by starting a design-build firm. The prospect was exhilarating – collaborating closely with clients from design conception to project realization felt like the ultimate fusion of creativity and practicality. However, as our projects expanded in scope and complexity, I found myself stretched thin, juggling multiple roles and responsibilities across construction sites, drafting boards, and permit offices.
After years of relentless 80-hour weeks, it became evident that a pivot was necessary. I knew there had to be a better way to leverage the skills of our talented team while delivering a service that truly addressed the needs of our clients. It was during this pivotal moment that my wife, also my business partner, began to focus on real estate.
This shift sparked a revelation: instead of emphasizing construction alongside architecture, we could offer real estate services in conjunction with architectural expertise. This strategic pivot enabled us to align our strengths more effectively, delivering a vertically integrated approach that balanced quality design with savvy real estate investments.
Today, our practice thrives on this refined model. By bidding out our projects to the best-qualified construction partners, we can focus on what we do best – providing innovative architectural solutions while helping our clients grow their real estate portfolios and bring their dream projects to life. It’s a testament to the power of adaptability and the willingness to pivot in pursuit of greater success and client satisfaction.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Embarking on my journey as an Architect and real estate developer, I was eager to apply the principles I preached and believed in as an Architect and aspiring developer – investing not just financial resources, but also time and talent into my own development projects. However, the path to success proved to be far more challenging than anticipated, filled with obstacles that tested my resilience at every turn.
One poignant example of this resilience stems from my first attempt to raise funds for a duplex development in Wash Park. Full of enthusiasm, I swiftly secured a property, meticulously designed the project, and crafted a compelling proforma promising investors an attractive return. Confident in the project’s potential, I eagerly reached out to my network, inviting them to partake in what I believed to be an incredible opportunity.
Despite my fervent efforts, two months of tireless fundraising yielded no results, and I faced the harsh reality of having to let go of the project and my earnest money. It was a bitter pill to swallow, a setback that stung deeply. However, amidst the disappointment, I discovered a silver lining – seasoned developers took notice of my ambition and resilience.
Although they didn’t invest in my project, they recognized my potential and offered me opportunities to design and build their own projects. It was through this unexpected turn of events that I secured my first clients, paving the way for me to eventually leave my day job and establish my own firm.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons in perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of building relationships in the face of adversity. It reinforced the notion that setbacks are not roadblocks but stepping stones to greater achievements, and that resilience is the key to turning setbacks into successes. Today, I carry these lessons with me as I continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of real estate development, fueled by an unwavering determination to overcome any challenge that comes my way.
