Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zeinab Makled. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Zeinab thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started This Little Candle Co. when I realized that manufactured candles were extremely toxic to the environment, humans and pets. I started it as a hobby by purchasing vegetable soy wax and crafting my own scents. I knew it would work when I got so much feedback from friends and families that they did not get irritated from the ingredients I was using. This really allowed me to expand into a customer base by providing more than just a great scent, I started designing the styles of candles too. One of a kind candles that you cannot find in store anywhere else so products are both clean and uniquely made.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I create 100% soy wax candles that are made with the cleanest ingredients. Our oils are toxic free and even our wicks are cotton core based. Everything that is made is in small batches so the scents are at the highest, most fragrant quality. What sets me apart is that I interact and build relationships with almost every single one of my customers. I ensure that everyone is satisfied and understands the brand that I am building.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During covid, there was a major shortage in jars. I had to go from using mason jars to finally expanding into luxury jars. I needed to just be able to pull the trigger on going with a nicer jar but was scared that the cost was going to scare people away. Luckily, people believed in my product as much as I did so I had huge traction and success with the new jars. While covid did delay delivery times, it also allowed for word to spread more.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Honestly, my background is solely in the healthcare industry. I hold a masters of business degree and utilized that to my advantage when it came to opening my own business. So after a few small batches of testing, I asked my husband for additional capital to fund for the start of the company and well, thankfully, I don’t have to pay him back!
