We recently connected with Zazel-Chavah O’Garra and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zazel-Chavah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
In the face of adversity, I was determined to survive but to thrive, using my experience as a springboard for positive change. Such is the story of the inception of ZCO/DANCEPROJECT, a physically integrated dance company born out of personal triumph, gratitude, and a profound desire to inspire others.
The journey leading to the establishment of ZCO/DANCEPROJECT began with a chapter of unexpected challenges. Following a diagnosis of a brain tumor that left me partially paralyzed, the path to recovery was undoubtedly arduous. However, instead of succumbing to despair, I embraced a “resurrection” as an opportunity to create something extraordinary. The absence of depression and the overwhelming gratitude for the gift of life propelled me to take action.
Recognizing the transformative power of dance, the journey of recovery served as the catalyst to establish ZCO/DANCEPROJECT. The company’s mission is clear: to share the joy of dance with individuals who, like me, navigate disabilities. Through this venture, I not only celebrate triumph over adversity but I extend my hand to others, showing them that limitations need not hinder the pursuit of passion and happiness.
My upbringing- Caribbean heritage, where the values of hard work and giving back are deeply ingrained pushed me to succeed. Armed with this cultural foundation, I embarked on the journey to create a platform where individuals of all abilities could express themselves, find healing, and defy societal expectations.
ZCO/DANCEPROJECT is a testament to the extraordinary potential that resides within individuals who harness their experiences to ignite change. The journey from diagnosis to the creation of a physically integrated dance company exemplifies the power of gratitude, resilience, and the desire to uplift others. By leveraging a Caribbean upbringing and cultural values, I have not only cultivated personal success but have sown the seeds of inspiration and transformation within the lives of many.
Zazel-Chavah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the founder and creative force behind ZCO/DANCEPROJECT. My journey into dance has been driven by a deep passion for the arts, and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in dance and in society. My entry into this industry was a result of a personal experience that ignited a fire within me. After being accepted to the High School of Performing Arts in New York and branching out studying dance and working with re-known choreographers in my professional career. This pivotal moment inspired me to channel my energy into creating ZCO/DANCEPROJECT, which is designed to work with mixed-ability dancers.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I aspire to be a beacon of hope for fellow minorities who may be grappling with their own obstacles. By showcasing the journey of success,I seek to shatter preconceived notions and ignite a spark of inspiration. My story serves as a tangible example that dreams are attainable, regardless of background or challenges. In the broader context of society, the artist’s contributions create ripples of change. Their artistry challenges norms and invites a shift in perspective. They remind us that embracing diversity and honoring the experiences of all individuals enriches our collective narrative. Through their passion and talent, they shape a world where barriers crumble, and possibilities flourish.
As an Afro-Caribbean disabled artist my journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. The determination to succeed, despite limitations, resonates not only within our community but across all walks of life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As anArtistic Director of ZCODP, a physically integrated dance company, I have a clear vision and purpose that guides my goals and journey. My foremost aim is to create a transformative and inclusive space where individuals of all abilities can come together to explore, express, and excel in the realm of dance and artistic expression.
One of my primary goals is to break down barriers and challenge societal norms surrounding disability and art. Through carefully curated performances, workshops, and collaborations, I strive to showcase the immense talent and creativity that individuals with disabilities possess. I want to shift perspectives and demonstrate that physical or mental challenges should not hinder artistic exploration and achievement.
I am dedicated to fostering a supportive community within the dance company, where every member feels valued, empowered, and encouraged to embrace their unique abilities. Inclusion goes beyond just sharing a space – it’s about creating an environment where everyone’s strengths are recognized, and limitations are viewed as opportunities for innovative artistic expression.
