We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zay Poole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I honestly feel I was a born creative. Now I’m not saying that I didn’t have to teach myself and learn certain things but, I always had a familiar grasp on the things I did creatively even if it was the first time coming in contact with it. That I will say is natural born talent which, I believe everyone has in their own way. I can say that thanks to just shadowing, trial and error, risks and research throughout the many years is how I learned, sharpened and improved what I do today.
I say what I could’ve done in order to speed up the process is honestly market myself more. I was never super big on social media due to personal reasons, and even to this day I’m not really big on it. Still I know that today social media and technology is big and I should take advantage of that like everyone else, which is what I’m trying to do now. So I may be a little late and behind but I know that won’t stop myself or my company from prospering. I don’t want to expand to much into it but marketing yourself and what you do today and being on social media is definitely hard and can be discouraging because you’ll see some people doing more than you or even progressing faster than you, but everyone needs to keep in mind. It’s just social media and people will show what they want to show and 9 out of 10 people aren’t showing the reality.
So don’t feel discouraged or get caught into the rabbit hole of non-realistic living.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Okay, so the general speech I give now in order to prevent ranting because I’m a ranter is I can do anything and everything creative, besides sing and rap. To be honest, I feel I lived and still living up to that small speech, and I say that because learning is what I do and experimenting is what I love so thanks to those ways of living, I was able to learn and gain knowledge in multiple fields of creativity. That being said, I also know my limits, I say I can do it which isn’t a lie but I won’t say I’m the best or greatest, that’s the truth but I promise you it doesn’t mean I don’t know how to do it. I can say I specialize in Acting, Modeling, Photography and Creative Directing/Director. I will say right now I’m more known for my photography and videography just because one of the cons of being multi-talented is that people always forget what else you can do, and I’m saying that in a more playful tone because It’s definitely a lot to remember.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
1. Stop lowballing artist and stop getting upset when the artist doesn’t want to work with you because you lowballed or disrespected them. That is a simple as I can put it.
2. Share their work consistently.
3. Understand that just because you may know the artist doesn’t mean they owe you a discount or anything if you’re coming to them for a service. Just like you pay full price for luxury brands and other services full price, and they don’t even know you, then you should be able to pay full price for a family member/friend because you believe in the work and know they will put the same amount of effort if not more.
4. Art and creating is contagious, so be open to what is put out there in the art form and try to see yourself in it because now youre taking it upon yourself to put yourself in their mind and that is a great way to really support an artist.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, and its really short and simple. To break the stereotypical taboo of the entertainment and creative industry
