We were lucky to catch up with Zakhy Collins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zakhy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Well, the idea stemmed from me trying to create a dope business after being released from a 10-year prison sentence. When I came home, I started to utilize and engaged with social media platforms like Instagram. What I learned about Instagram, was people trying to express how they feel through pictures and images. Something that stood out to me was a lot of people wanted to express that they had money (whether that was true or not, lol) and that they were some type of boss. That’s where the name, Money Bosses was born. I asked a few people what they thought about the name, and they just loved it. They thought it was dope. And from there I just went on rep it. I started putting it on clothes, and trademark. That, and the rest is history.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I just love fashion, and dressing. I have been into fashion, since elementary school. It’s crazy how I got into the industry. When I used to walk through the mall, I just never seen what I really wanted to wear and what represented me. The only mall that I could find quality gear that I like was Lenox.
I am very picky when it comes to what I wear. I do not like cheap, low quality looking clothes. And what’s distinguishes Money Bosses, is the niche that we are carving out. We are not just a streetwear brand. We are creating a lane called, “Designer Drip Fashion.”
Being from Atlanta, we have a culture that I feel we have lost in the fashion industry. Will you look at some of our older rappers, like Rocko, Young Dro, Shawty Lo, they were some of the flyest individuals in the rap game. Our mission is to bring back that original Atlanta culture that we have lost, and supply it to the world.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I served 10 years in the Georgia prison system. It was a rough and hard journey, but I did not let that deter me from what I wanted to do in my mission. One of my purposes is to really show the younger generation that with dedication, self-respect, and honor, you can really create a successful path.
No real job wants to hire a felon, no matter how old your record is. It can even be expunged, they have ways of pulling it. But you can’t let that stop your mission. Ever since the beginning of worldly time, great people have had obstacles that try to stop them from their mission. So who are you to think you are going to have it easy? Stay down!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
What I learned about social media and the direction that it is going
I should have made myself a product, before I even made my clothing brand a product. What I mean by that is, once you try to build a social media platform, you need to be comfortable getting on camera speaking with passion, and topics that resonates with your audience. That helps you with, engagement and shareable content, versus just posting pictures of products, etc. Create a voice and be loud and authentic with it. With it. If you speak slang, stand on that. Don’t try to change. Because there is an audience that resonates with your voice, values and what you represent.
