We were lucky to catch up with Zak Osmond recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zak thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Over the last 3 years, I have been involved with the annual Tent Party hosted by the Neighborhood House in Salt Lake City, UT. Neighborhood House offers nationally accredited toddler, preschool, afterschool, and summer programs for children aged 15 months to 12 years old. They also provide daycare and support services for adults needing supervised care during the day. Through this event, this organization has successfully raised large amounts of money and support from many individuals within the local community. It has been amazing to meet and observe many people who have been impacted by this great initiative and actively give back to those in need. The next Tent Party will be Saturday, September 16, 2023. Please visit www.nhutah.org for more information and come party with us!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My passion for music started at the age of 3 when I began performing regularly alongside my father, Jimmy Osmond, at the Osmond Family Theatre in Branson, Missouri. Through the years, I participated in many of my father’s productions worldwide by singing, dancing, and playing various musical instruments. In 2006, my family and I moved to Utah and my involvement in the entertainment business lessened, allowing me to focus more on school and sports. During the Christmas season of 2012, my love for live performance and music was rekindled as I had the opportunity to complete a residency at Busch Gardens Theme Park in Tampa, Florida. There I performed as a singer and drummer in daily shows to help entertain park visitors. After this experience, I continued touring with my father and occasionally helped as a member of his tech crew. In 2015, I became interested in DJing and it quickly became a creative outlet that allowed me to express myself through music in a new way. I decided to chase my dream of becoming a professional DJ and created my own event production and DJ service company known as Oz Entertainment.
My unique upbringing and experience in the entertainment industry are ultimately what sets me apart from others. I am accustomed to performing in front of thousands of people at a time and can stay calm under pressure while continuing to keep my energy high during a performance.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about DJing is the ability to have a positive impact on people through the music I play. Life is not easy, but it is meant to be enjoyed! I take pride in being able to create an environment where people can be happy and unapologetically themselves. This is what helps motivate me to constantly find new music and improve my techniques. I will continue to work hard and further develop my skillset so that I will always be able to provide this service to people.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Hip-Hop and R&B artist, Russ, wrote a book titled, “It’s All In Your Head”. Russ discusses the early stages of his musical career and experiences managing the difficulties of pursuing his passion. Reading this book inspired me to become vulnerable and take more risks in pursuing my career as a DJ. Many (like myself) may become fearful of following their passions due to failure and the judgment of others. However, if we stick with our dreams and refuse to fail, we can and will eventually succeed. The key is consistency. I recommend this book to anyone that feels passionate but hesitant about pursuing their dreams.
