We recently connected with Zainab Khan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zainab, thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My hero is my dad. During his teens in Pakistan, rock music was an unpopular genre, yet he found his passion from the unknown, developing an unconventional persona. He would use batteries as guitar picks and even held me as an exercise barbell during his workouts, helping me see the world through an imaginative and unique lens.
My dad did not let his environment dictate him. He later went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, raising funds for the victims of the 2005 local earthquake. This act of compassion and determination inspired me to take pride in helping those around me, whether it is tutoring a friend or lending a hand to a stranger. He created a childhood where I developed a strong thirst for knowledge, a desire to break from norms, and, most importantly, a deep respect for hardworking people like him.
From my dad, I learned the importance of perseverance, creativity, and altruism. He taught me that it’s possible to follow one’s passions regardless of societal expectations and to use one’s talents to make a positive impact. I aim to follow in his footsteps, not by replicating his journey but by carving out my own path that pushes the boundaries of technology and creativity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a student myself and feeling the monotony and realizing the disconnect many students experienced during the pandemic, including myself, I recognized the need for a change. When I saw my friends and classmates struggling with online learning, that’s when I decided to step up. I saw a gap, a void that needed filling, and I believed I could contribute something valuable.
The desire to make a meaningful impact on the learning experience during such challenging times became the catalyst for creating Studimation. It was a moment of clarity, recognizing that I could turn an idea into a reality to benefit not just myself but an entire community of learners. After finishing my online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, I came across an ad for animation software. Intrigued, I started playing around with it and decided to create a video about the science topic I was studying for my test the next day.
When I showed it to my parents, they were so impressed that they suggested adding narration and sharing it on YouTube. Not only did it help me study better, but when I shared the video with my classmates, they found it super useful too. After witnessing the positive impact on my friends’ grades and receiving their heartfelt messages, I became dedicated to making more videos. I wanted to ensure I covered topics they found helpful and even took requests.
As months passed and I continued uploading, something incredible happened — people from around the world started watching. It was both surprising and gratifying to see my videos resonate with a global audience, and the supportive comments kept pouring in. I understand that everyone learns differently, so I made sure to include visual, audio, and written elements in my videos. When my videos were featured in the California Adult Education Program that’s when I realized that my videos not only people my age but also adults.
Reading comments from learners of all ages brightens my day, and I love covering topics that people request! I aimed to make learning engaging and accessible, with a focus on diverse subjects. Recently the creation of The Zainab Khan Podcast extends my impact, bringing insights from various fields to our audience. Ultimately, my goal is to empower individuals, leveraging creativity, education, and technology to make a lasting social impact.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I, being a student myself created Studimation, (an educational YouTube channel) during the pandemic, providing educational content during challenging times. I aim to make learning engaging and accessible, with a focus on diverse subjects. Additionally, initiatives like Book Week series bring renowned authors to students, fostering a love for literature. How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale can be challenging, but these key lessons have been invaluable in my journey:
Embrace Imperfections: Encourage your team to accept that mistakes are part of the process. In my experience with Studimation, a small mistake in a video edit resonated with viewers, highlighting the value of authenticity.
Value Feedback: Foster a culture where constructive criticism is welcomed. Initially, I hesitated to receive feedback, but I soon realized it’s a crucial tool for improvement and alignment with the audience’s needs.
Prioritize Self-Care: Balance passion with self-care to avoid burnout. Encourage your team to take breaks and maintain a healthy work-life balance, ensuring sustained creativity and productivity.
Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate every achievement, big or small. This practice boosts morale and keeps the team motivated by adding a sense of accomplishment to the journey.
Adaptability is a Strength: Promote flexibility and openness to change. Adapting to new trends and audience preferences is essential for staying relevant and innovative.
By embracing imperfections, valuing feedback, prioritizing self-care, celebrating milestones, and being adaptable, you can effectively manage your team and maintain high morale.
