We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zaidra James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zaidra below.
Zaidra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for my business in college, right before COVID. I’ve always been a creative person who was constantly thinking of new ways to create, innovate, and make money. My first idea was selling food on campus because my friends were always telling me how much they loved my cooking. I thought, “Why not turn something people already enjoy into a business?” What started as me just experimenting quickly became successful, and that showed me the power of turning an idea into something real.
That gave me the confidence to create something bigger my own clothing brand. I was passionate about fashion, modeling, and self-expression, but I was honestly nervous. At the time, I had no following, I wasn’t known, and I was just a college track girl wondering if anyone would actually support me. I took one of my refund checks, split it in half, and used part of it to start my business. It was one of the boldest decisions I’ve ever made.
I knew it was worth pursuing because I saw how quickly my first idea grew. It proved to me that if I believed in something and put in the work, I could make it happen.
With my clothing brand, I wanted to solve a problem I personally noticed: creating pieces that were stylish, versatile, and high quality. I wanted clothes people could dress up, go out in, or even work out in while still being comfortable, especially for people in Houston’s climate. I focused on making pieces that weren’t too thin or cheap, but also weren’t too heavy or uncomfortable.
My unique approach was becoming my own first customer. I wore my brand everywhere, and my friends did the same. We styled the pieces in different ways and let people see how they fit into real life. That’s how we built conversations, attracted attention, and grew our clientele naturally.

Zaidra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am originally from Jamaica, and I moved to Texas on a full scholarship for track and field. Growing up as an athlete, fashion was always a huge part of my identity. Even with my track uniform, I always found ways to add my own style and make things feel unique. I’ve always been creative, loved standing out, and had a vision for creating something that blended fashion, confidence, and individuality.
My journey into entrepreneurship started right before COVID when I tested an idea of selling food on campus. It was something no one else was doing, and I wanted to see if I could turn a simple idea into an opportunity. The response was bigger than I expected, and that gave me the confidence to pursue entrepreneurship and eventually create my own clothing brand.
That brand became Black Diamond Kouture a fashion brand built around versatility, confidence, and quality. As a track athlete and someone who later entered modeling, I wanted to create pieces that reflected my lifestyle: clothing you can dress up, wear casually, or even be active in. I wanted people to have comfortable, high-quality pieces that didn’t sacrifice style.
What sets my brand apart is that it represents more than clothing. I started this from nothing with no background, no blueprint, and just a vision. I’m most proud of building something from a small idea into a brand that represents who I am.
Black Diamond Kouture is my baby. It represents the idea that, like diamonds, we are created under pressure. You may go through challenges, but you don’t always have to look like what you’ve been through. My goal is for women to feel confident, powerful, and reminded that their experiences can shape them into something beautiful.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by being authentic and making myself the face of my brand. I realized early on that if I wanted people to connect with my clothing, my vision, and my story, I had to put myself out there. Especially because modeling was also something I was passionate about, it made sense to show the person behind the brand.
I started by posting more of myself my lifestyle, my creative process, and photos of me wearing my own pieces. I focused on creating a connection with people rather than just promoting products. I also immersed myself in the YouTube community, networked consistently, and looked for opportunities to collaborate with creators, influencers, and other people who could help expand my reach.
A lot of it came from simply being consistent and intentional. I put myself in rooms, created content, and continued finding ways to grow my platform. After gaining recognition and going viral multiple times, my audience grew organically, and I was able to build my platform to where it is today over 116,000 followers @zaidrajames.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, I’ve had to make a major pivot in my career. I transitioned from being a collegiate and professional track and field athlete into becoming a full-time entrepreneur and model.
For a long time, I was following a path that other people expected for me, and I reached a point where I had to choose myself and pursue what genuinely made me happy even if it meant taking a risk or stepping into the unknown. That decision led me into entrepreneurship and modeling, two worlds that naturally connected because of my passion for fashion and creativity.
Through that transition, I was able to learn more about the industry, work with different brands and creatives, and see fashion from multiple perspectives. It made me appreciate the craft even more.
The hardest part was changing how people viewed me. When people know you for one thing, it can be difficult to suddenly be recognized for something completely different. But I learned that if you stay consistent, believe in your vision, and stand firm in who you are, people eventually see the bigger picture. That pivot became one of the most important decisions I’ve made.
