We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zack Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Zack, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Obsession. I have a couple friends that have started their own businesses, and I can tell whether it’s going to be successful or not based on how obsessed they are with it. Personally, I am obsessed with the art of creating content and light science. It is a no brainer that I am a photographer and a videographer. My job doesn’t feel like a job when I’m doing something that I love. I’m obsessed with creating content plus I am a hopeless romantic. I primarily shoot weddings, and I tell all my clients I love “LOVE”. I’m obsessed with producing great images and telling great stories through the art of videography and photography.
Obsession=Success

Zack, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there! My name is Zachary Wilson, but most people call me Zack. I started creating content down in Hollywood as a Set Light Technician. I was able to work with a lot of top name artists like Post Malon, DJ Kahlid, and Bebe Rexha just to name a few. I loved creating content, but I hated working 80 work weeks, so I went to college got a degree and started working a 9-5 job in which I HATED.
One lucky day I got laid off and remembered what Jim Carrey once said, “I learned many, many lessons from my father, but not least of which is that you can fail at something you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance doing what you love.”
So, I used my last paycheck to buy a camera, and I started shooting weddings. I now own CutRoom Productions LLC based out of Northern Nevada. CutRoom is a LLC company that offers videography and photography services based out of Northern Nevada. We primarily service Reno, Sparks, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe, and North Lake Tahoe. With a commitment to excellence and innovation, we bring your vision to life through expert video production and tailored services. Our passion here at CutRoom is to not only capture the very essence of every shot but to stitch it together in a tapestry that tells a cinematic story.
The main thing that I believe sets me and my company apart is the passion and personability that my team and I have. We mainly shoot weddings, and I get to know each one of my couples on a personable level to ensure comfortability in front of a camera.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
When I started out, I was actually explicitly doing videography for weddings. I joined some wedding networking groups where wedding vendors met to go over marketing techniques when I heard about a Bridal Expo that they were planning. I talked to the woman in charge of the Expo at one of these group meetings and told her I’d love to be a part of the Expo but instead of paying for a booth like the other vendors, we agreed that I would craft the commercials for these expos. My videos ended up airing on 8 different TV Channels in my area, making me more reputable and getting me in front of my ideal clientele.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I launched my business, I knew it would take a LOT of time and effort to get it off the ground. I was in a new state when I started my business. I didn’t have a whole lot of friends or family to help spread the word. I wasn’t successful right out the gate. In fact, I had a job as a barista. Even then working at a coffee shop got in the way of my small business. So, I got a new job as a program manager for a before and after school program. This meant I only worked 3 hours before and after school. I made $23/hour because I had a B.A. Degree. With this job it meant I could work the busy wedding summer season and work in between shifts. When things got really busy, I simply only worked mornings from 6:30am-9:30am. Working just the morning shifts then became a regular thing as my business grew. That was until I set financial goals for myself. First it was to make 20k in 1 year, then 25k the next, then 30k the following year. I have yet to fail to reach my goal, and my current goal is to make 45k this next year doing what I love which doesn’t feel like work at all. As I tell most people, If I had 10 million dollars, I would still do exactly what I am doing which is to create content that I love creating.
