We recently connected with Zachary Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Zachary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects Ive worked on is the new album I’m currently in the studio recording right now. This will be my second release as a solo artist and my first full length album so it has been quite an undertaking! Most people really don’t understand what it’s like to try to produce music and how much work, money, and time that it takes. I have been well over a year writing and preparing these songs to be what I want them to be. My first EP Battle Born, was released in full last year and I like to think I am taking all that I learned from the writing process and the release of that record and really honing in my sound and progressing as a musician in this next record. There is a bit of a sadder theme to this album. As I released Battle Born I began going through a really hard and to be honest very lonely point in my life, and so many of the themes in this album took form due to the sadness and anguish I was feeling at the time. I truly poured myself into these songs and feel I did my best to convey through music what I was feeling at the time, and what I feel many people experience in this life at some point or another. As a whole the album progresses and you can feel the emotion portrayed of getting over something and finding yourself again.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Zachary Williams and I’m a 24 year old musician. Ive always loved music, and always wanted for it to be a big part of my life. I currently am in three bands/projects being: Lead Guitar and music writer for the heavy metal band State of Decay, Bassist for the band Orcamind, and last but not least the last few years I have been playing my own solo music under the name Zachary Williams. Building my own brand as a solo artist has been an extremely hard, yet rewarding thing to do. I released my first EP Battle Born last year and learning to market and get it to people has been a struggle for me. However it has been going very well lately, and I was able to open up for the country music legends Black Hawk at The Depot in Salt Lake City last year. What a surreal night that was! I continue to strive for moments I can experience music to the fullest extent like that and am currently recording my new full length album set to release towards the end of the year.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to hear an idea in my head, get it out on the guitar and with my voice, and then eventually play it for people and for them to truly enjoy it. There is a feeling like none other when this thing that you created is known and talked about and people can truly appreciate it. That is what drives me to keep pushing forward in music. To keep doing the same process I’ve loved to do since I was just a young kid with a guitar and wanted to write my first song.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think for a start, actually caring about them. Many times (myself included) we all see those friends who are always playing local shows or doing things and think oh they are just chasing the attention. I don’t think most people know how helpful the smallest acts can be to a musician such as myself. Simply sharing their work on social media, the easiest thing to do yet so few people actually do this to support their friends. Go out to local shows on occasion and show your friends who are artists that what they are doing matters and to support local real people in their communities.
