We recently connected with Zachary Spuckler and have shared our conversation below.
Zachary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
I’ve been in business for about 8 years, and every years something new comes along that allows us to morph, change and evolve…
I think for me the biggest thing that has contributed to scaling up would be getting clear on our goals, and our spend. I put a lot of dollars into Facebook & Instagram advertising (as an agency, that makes sense) – but I think so often in the marketing world we think that it’s all about making it rain.
For us it’s about investing money strategically into our marketing and personal (and team) education. We work with mentors, and coaches, who also help us see our blind spots.
There’s not simple “here’s how we scaled in 7 steps” type thing. Sometimes it’s messy, and sometimes it’s challenging, but when I come back to two principles…
-> Spend more time and money on marketing
-> Investing in support from mentors and coaches
I also have a stream of new leads, and a team of support behind me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’re a Facebook & Instagram ads agency with an education arm of our business for those that might not be at the level to hire us to manage their ads… yet! We focus on education brands (ie people with info or knowledge based products).
We have the agency where we manage the ads for you, setup, testing, optimization, scaling, etc. We only take on a handful of clients at a time to keep our service high touch, but for those that aren’t quite ready (or when we’re at capacity) we also offer a membership program.
Not You Average Membership is our core product where people can learn the ads and marketing strategies that we implement with our clients. It include community, coaching, and content designed to help them craft a profitable marketing strategy with ads at the center.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For our the most effective strategy for growing our clientele (in the agency) has been word of mouth and referrals. When I first started the agency arm of our business – I heard a LOT from potential clients that communication was lacking in previous agencies they worked with.
So we took that as an opportunity – we communicate with our clients on a regular basis and keep them informed of what is happening in their accounts consistently – which leads to happy clients and referrals.
Starting out – I used social media and organic marketing, now most clients come by way of recommendation.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is funny to me – I’m not a huge fan of posting or being their 24/7. Interestingly enough we’ve lost multiple social media accounts…
An Instagram with 9.5k followers, and a page with 20k followers…
We grow our following with ads, not trying to game the algorithm. I think so many people are trying to go viral, and reach new audiences organically and it’s just a lot harder than it used to be. So we focus on ads that grow our email list, and as a byproduct – we move people into our social following where I post sporadically and intentionally.
