We were lucky to catch up with Zachary Neeley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Zachary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
Transitioning my staff–and our services–to 100% online was a fairly straightforward decision for me. After talking with my staff, I found that it was much easier for them to conduct online tutoring sessions than in-person sessions. I quickly rebranded my business as an online tutoring company and completely moved away from offering in-person options. My staff and I are much happier as a result.
In a sense, this transition was a blessing in disguise. Fully remote work has opened up a much, much bigger market for me as a business owner as I’m not limited to how far I or my staff is willing to drive to a student’s house. Furthermore, it has allowed me to cut costs and book more sessions since I’m not taking the time to print out materials and drive to a student’s house. It has surprised me how many companies are arbitrarily forcing their staff to RTO when it’s very clear that remote work has so many benefits for both employers and workers.
Zachary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Atlas Tutoring offers private and group sessions to students from middle school to graduate school in a variety of subjects, including English, math, science, economics, college counseling, and test prep. At Atlas Tutoring, we aim to personalize every session to meet the needs of our students and focus on areas in which the student needs to improve. Each session is flexible and designed to work with the student to not only complete their work but help them achieve their short- and long-term goals. We do that in the most effective way possible—mastering the subject area and building lifelong, professional confidence. Our experienced tutors are passionate educators who’ve taken it upon themselves to help their community understand the effectiveness of personalized tutoring. Additionally, our tutors are known for their friendliness, flexibility, understanding, and subject mastery. Lastly, our company is proud to offer students flexible scheduling options that include late evenings and weekends, making it easier for students to find times that work for them.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started tutoring shortly after I graduated from college in May 2021. Initially, it was something that I did on the side for extra money, but as time went on, I realized that I liked tutoring. I became a full-time professional tutor in the spring of 2022, and one year later, after being dissatisfied with the current trajectory of my career, I decided to go into business for myself. Atlas Tutoring was officially founded in January 2023, and it has been going up ever since!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Every single one of my clients–both parents and students–has access to my personal cell. I do this to maintain an open channel of communication for feedback, updates, and check-ins, and my clients are always welcome to text me with other matters aside from scheduling sessions. And, of course, I’m always happy to hear about updates long after they’ve stopped taking sessions!
