We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Zach Frankart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Zach below.
Alright, Zach thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
We filmed an interview with Jack Kessler as part of a project for the United Way. We arrived an hour before the interview, took our equipment up to the seventh floor conference room and spent the next forty minutes making sure everything was lit perfectly. Jack sits down for his interview, we roll camera and then suddenly CLICK, every building on the block lost power. We only had Jack for half an hour and the power company informed us it was going to take several hours to get things back online so we had to pivot. We moved the interview in front of a window overlooking Columbus, Ohio’s Arena District and were able to fall back on battery powered camera and lighting. It was a high pressure, high-stress situation but luckily our team was able to adapt on the fly and got the job done.

Zach, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been filming since I was 10-years-old. My friends and I would make little short films, doing our best to recreate scenes from movies we loved. I went to college at The Ohio State University, majoring in film studies while also working in the video department at the Fisher College of Business. After college I immediately started freelancing and that grew into Frankart Film.
Today, I work with clients in a creative capacity to find the best way to tell their story, I then work with our production crew to bring that vision to life. Video production comes with a lot of challenges, it’s a pressure cooker environment where there are always unforeseen obstacles and every minute counts. One of my biggest strengths is being able to navigate those waters while still creating a fun, relaxed environment for the client, cast and crew.
I take pride in approaching each project as its own unique work, constantly looking for new ways to tell compelling stories in a creative way.

Have you ever had to pivot?
In March 2020, we were filming an interview with Columbus’ Mayor Ginther when he had to step away and take a phone call, making the decision to cancel the Arnold Classic. It was at that point we started to realize the seriousness of COVID.
Within a couple weeks, every project we had on the horizon was postponed indefinitely.
This was by far the scariest time for us as an organization but, at a time when other businesses were struggling to survive, we grew.
We were able to accomplish this by pivoting as a business and leaning into existing relationships with healthcare companies, eventually obtaining permission to cross state lines during lockdown and film in active health facilities as they battled the pandemic.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I’m fortunate that my business partner, Jenny, is also my spouse but before we were married we met when she was a successful marketing director in Southern California. The company she worked for ended up hiring me for several video projects and we were able to get a feel for what working together would be like. Eventually, after a few years of persistent encouragement from friends and family, we decided to take the leap and work together full time. And we’ve never looked back. Today, she runs our company and produces all of our projects.
