We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zach Coffman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Zach thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?

Working on our debut EP titled Cross In The Field Where The Memory Bleeds was very meaningful to the band. Zach Coffman used to share the stage and musical ideas with his older brother Christopher Coffman. Christopher Coffman who was in the band unfortunately lost his life in 2022. The EP is a tribute to him and goes into some of the most vulnerable writing Zach has done. Christopher also plays on the EP. Thankfully we recorded a solo he wrote for our song “Why?” Before he died.

Now, we all play in his name. We want to do this for him. Zach still writes music regarding his older brother’s death. And now with the addition of his younger brother Sam Coffman on drums. The band is no complete and at every show they always pay tribute and honor to their older brother Christopher and always provide a way to relate to others who have struggled with the same issue of loss.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Zach Coffman and i’m the guitarist/vocalist for the alternative rock band “Intension.”

Growing up I was always intrigued by music. Starting on the piano at the young age of 5. Once I got a grasp of the piano I was able to learn my favorite songs at the time. Maybe I’m amazed by Paul McCartney, Bennie and the Jets by Elton John, and even John Legends “All Of Me.” Which was the first song I ever attempted to sing.

At the age of 11 is when I picked up the guitar for the first time. My older brother Christopher showed me how to play guitar. He was and will always be my main inspiration.

Once I learned the guitar I then picked up the drums, bass, how to sing, and how to play in a band.

I make music as a way to diary. My guitar is a voice that I never know how to speak. Id be lost without it. I try my hardest to write songs that I want to hear. I know the song is done when it feels like a massive weight was let off of me.

It means the world to me when people come up to me after a show and tell me how much they relate to a song I wrote and how they found peace with the track. Warms my heart not only to hear I made them feel better but also that im not alone in what I go through regarding my brothers death.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

The main goal of the band is to show people that no matter what life throws at you, you must always fight and carry on. When I lost my older brother Christopher I felt so helpless like my life was over. So I did what I knew he would want me to do. Start a band and put out the music he helped the hand create. If it wasn’t for the band and the support of my friends I don’t think i’d be writing this interview right now.

That was a dark time for me and the band continues to show me that there is a light at the end of this dark, dark tunnel. We hope to provide this same view of light to our listeners and show them no one is ever alone.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

The best way to support artist is to simply just come out to live shows! Having an audience to play for helps out the performers so much. And it also helps with tickets sales to show the venue we can bring some people.

We don’t do this for the money at all. We do this because we would all go insane without music. But unfortunately, the industry does it for money. So we have to be able to make money in order to perform. So thats why supporting live music is such a big deal.

It not only helps the artist perform, but it also helps the music venues and makes the band be able to continue to play and do what they want to. Which is get their own personal word out.
