Zabriel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally when I realized the profound impact my heritage and culture had on others. Growing up on Saint Helena Island, I held my heritage close to my heart. As I journeyed across the globe as an international opera singer, my Gullah accent became a beacon of curiosity wherever I stepped foot. The questions about my roots, about the Gullah Geechee people, echoed in every place I visited.
With each inquiry, I felt a surge of pride and a yearning to share the rich tapestry of my culture. A passion was ignited within me to not just sing, but to sing of my people, their struggles, their triumphs, their stories woven through generations. This realization fueled my desire to pursue a path where I could creatively express and celebrate my heritage while connecting with others on a profound level through music and storytelling.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Zabriel Rivers, and I’m deeply rooted in the vibrant culture of the Gullah Geechee people. Growing up on Saint Helena Island, I was immersed in the rich traditions of my ancestors, and it’s from this foundation that I’ve forged my path as a Gullah singer and performer.
My journey into this industry began with a profound realization of the power and beauty of Gullah music and storytelling. As I embarked on my career as an opera singer, I noticed the profound impact my Gullah heritage had on audiences worldwide. People were captivated by the unique rhythms, melodies, and stories that I shared, and this sparked a passion within me to delve deeper into my cultural roots.
Today, I offer a range of products and services centered around Gullah singing and performing. From captivating live performances that transport audiences to the shores of Saint Helena Island to educational workshops that explore the history and significance of Gullah culture, my goal is to preserve, celebrate, and share this invaluable heritage with the world.
One of the key problems I aim to solve for my clients is the preservation of Gullah culture in the face of modernization and globalization. By showcasing the beauty and authenticity of Gullah music and storytelling, I hope to ensure that these traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my authentic connection to the Gullah Geechee community and my deep respect for its traditions. Every note I sing, every story I share is infused with the spirit of my ancestors, creating an experience that is both powerful and deeply meaningful.
I’m most proud of the opportunity to serve as a cultural preservationist for the Gullah Geechee people. Whether performing for world leaders or sharing the stage with renowned artists, I take immense pride in representing my community and shining a spotlight on its vibrant culture.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is not just about entertainment—it’s about honoring a legacy, preserving a heritage, and celebrating the resilience and beauty of the Gullah Geechee people. Whether you’re looking for an unforgettable performance, an educational experience, or simply a connection to something truly authentic, I invite you to join me on this journey of discovery and celebration.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a Gullah singer aspiring to become a recording artist, my mission involves preserving and sharing Gullah culture through music. My goals include representing Gullah traditions authentically, advocating for social justice, expressing personal experiences, and achieving success and recognition in the music industry.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is often the ability to express myself creatively, connect with audiences on an emotional level, and make a positive impact through my work. Additionally, artists often find fulfillment in the freedom of self-expression, the opportunity to inspire others, and the ability to contribute to cultural and social conversations.
