We were lucky to catch up with Z3LLA MUSIC recently and have shared our conversation below.
Z3LLA, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Everything happens for a reason. The two of us grew up working in entertainment and although we had ups and downs of wins and losses, we never hit that “we made it” moment individually. From working professionally in theatre, to acting, to writing for other artists, we have worked a variety of the entertainment industry. It wasn’t until the pact was made to debut our duo project, that we started to see organic overnight success. So no, I think everything we did on our own in life led us to naturally come together for this project in its own perfect timing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Recently, Z3LLA inked a deal with LMG X Varick St. X Universal Music Group, aligning themselves with a powerhouse team that recognizes their immense potential. After working on projects with MK over the years, the female duo just signed a publishing deal with Marc Kinchen (MK) and 360 Management. This duo is backed by some of the biggest acts in the dance space. Z3LLA’s last two releases have been taking over radio — racking up hundreds of spins on Sirius XM and iHeart radio — they hosted ‘The Chainsmokers Show’ on Sirius XM, Pitbulls Globalization, along with doing multiple live mixes for Sirius XM. The duo has started headlining and supporting other acts on the road and never fail to work a crowd. Most recently, they headlined The Grand in Boston, and opened for Disco Lines on their recent North American tour. With only three singles released to date, they continue to have songs on rotation with Sirius XM BPM, Evolution Radio, and iHeart stations across the country. With a giant catalog of unreleased tracks ready for the world to hear, Z3LLA is poised to leave a lasting impression on the music scene. Beyond their roles as vocalists, producers, and DJs, Z3LLA embodies the spirit of true artists, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territories.
The impact of Z3LLA is indescribable, as their presence in any room is electrifying. The two have upcoming projects coming out with renowned UK DJ Marc Kinchen, NITTI, Felix Cartal, Discrete, Disco Lines and many more. Making their chart debut in both Media Dance and Billboard/Mixshow in the Top 5 and Top 20, respectively, there’s no doubt the girls are here to stay as they continue to climb. Entering a male dominated industry, they are one of their kind to write, sing, and DJ their songs themselves. With their unique blend of styles, undeniable talent, and an unwavering commitment to their art, Z3LLA stands poised to redefine the house music scene and leave a legacy behind.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Our second single was actually written based on a short story named “Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman. Our song “Yellow Wallpaper” is about a couple prolonging the inevitable end of their long term relationship that they know isn’t the same as it was in the beginning but it feels safe and they don’t want to let it go. The couple is still in the same physical environment..(same appt, same decor, same town) as they have been their whole relationship and it seems like nothing has changed when you look on it from the outside in, but yet they both know nothing feels the same. The title “Yellow Wallpaper” was inspired by the short story “Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the similar motifs the protagonist in the short story had along with the couple in our song. In the story, the woman was going through emotional rollercoasters in this same room every day that the only thing she could fixate on was this bright yellow wallpaper. The only thing she had control over. The song has some bright elements to it as does the story of the couple trying to bring back that first time feeling but the layers of the lyrics carry a weight when carefully listened to. When it feels like everything around you has stayed the same, but yet you feel so far from it, you just want to rip that yellow wallpaper off the walls.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The connection. Whether it is the out of body connection with another creative in making art, or translating and giving the listener or audience member that experience, that is what we live for. Human connection is so magical and that connection through art is just the more felt. So many people feel alone in so many life experiences and if they can have a song they can relate to and know another human has gone through the same and that makes them feel less alone, then we have done our job.
