We recently connected with Yvonne Martinez and have shared our conversation below.
Yvonne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
One of the best bosses I’ve had was a woman named Faye.
What stood out most was her genuine personality and the support during challenging times. She educated me on how to deal with disrespectful customers.
One of many, I faced a customer who insulted me and stated “let me give you a tip, you won’t make it far in life if you can’t even serve a cup of coffee”
Faye’s guidance in that challenging moment not only helped me handle the situation with grace but also instilled in me the confidence and resilience needed to navigate similar encounters in the future. It’s clear that her belief in me made a lasting impact on my personal and professional development.

Yvonne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I stay rooted in my hometown of Round Rock, Texas, I own a small beauty studio named RENOVADA, meaning “renewed” in English, it’s a fitting tribute to both my personal journey and my commitment to helping my clients feel refreshed through my services. I enjoy embracing my community and contributing to its beauty.
I have to thank my grandma Isabel for directing me in this industry.
She was a hairdresser back in the day.
Even though she never listened to what I wanted with my hair,
I fascinated what she did for a living. She had a small salon in her home. I would go in there often to play with her tools when she wasn’t around. (Sorry grandma.)
Now, as a professional in the industry, I prioritize listening to my clients wants and needs, an impact my grandma had on my journey.
Providing a personalized experience where clients feel heard and valued is truly important to me. I’m dedicated to making each appointment a memorable and enjoyable one whether they’re looking for a quiet session or a lively chisme (gossip) one.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Well, it all started with doing makeup for prom and cutting simple haircuts for a friend at home with kitchen shears (yes, I’m guilty of that too) shout out to my friends who trusted me
After I made the decision to attend beauty school and gaining some work experience,
It was there I learned the ins and outs of the industry.
Once I was confident in my abilities, I took the leap and started my own business. At first, it was something I did to accommodate my schedule as a parent,
But as word of mouth spread and my client base grew, I began to see the potential for something much bigger.
Before I knew it, it had turned into a thriving business.
Today, I’m proud to say that I work full time as a cosmetologist and have the freedom to work on my own terms and the satisfaction of knowing that I’m making a positive impact on the lives of others through my work in the beauty industry.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Relationships with your clients is truly important. By genuinely caring about them and taking the time to connect on a personal level, you create a bond that goes beyond just providing a service.
This level of trust naturally leads to referrals, as satisfied clients are eager to share their positive experiences with others.
Additionally, using social media platforms to showcase your work and engage with your audience can help expand your reach and attract new clients who may discover you online
Overall, continue nurturing those relationships, providing exceptional service, and encouraging referrals, and your clientele will continue to grow organically.
