We were lucky to catch up with Yvette Carrillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yvette, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
A Periodontist is a dental specialist, who after four years of dental school spends three additional years focusing on gum and bone health and options to replace missing teeth which include implants. I never imagined myself a businesswoman or entrepreneur, but after various jobs not fitting my needs, I decided to branch out and take the second biggest risk I had every taken.
Becoming a specialist and surgeon was the first big risk. I was an average student struggling to stay in the pack (not ahead of the pack). My residency was a pure coincidence and someone taking a risk on me. Shortly after, my chance at living my dream was almost lost (along with my life) after I was in a dear death accident. Things were quickly put into perspective, I knew I wanted to live, but I knew I had more left to give.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sure, I have always had an inner calling for healthcare. My dad is a practicing dentist of 40 years so when veterinary medicine seemed too heartbreaking, dentistry seemed like a safe choice. I was very wrong. After four years of dental school, I specialized in periodontics and implant surgery. I focus on dental surgery where we improve gum and bone health and also implants when I cannot save a patients teeth. There is such an intimate and intertwined connection between the mouth and the human body. There are so many layers to peel back when trying to determine the etiology of a patients disease. This includes emotional, health care related issues, financial issues, though periodontics is my specialty, I would say my specialty is listening and helping.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There are many times in life that we have to pivot. The first and most significant pivot was when I left my hometown after a job was not meeting my emotional or financial needs to stay afloat. I had to do some deep soul searching about 1) where I wanted to grow old and 2) where I wanted to grow. That’s how I made the brave brave move to live and work in San Diego, CA. I had no job, no money, no plan, I just packed and moved. I found a studio apartment where I slept on a blow up mattress, and used disposable silverware while the rest fell into place. I had to work really hard to get to where I am today, but I knew that San Diego was my home.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I genuinely care. I care about my patients, my team, my surroundings and those that pop in and out of my life. I try and make it a point to show I care and I do think this is seen and felt by those that I come into contact with, especially my patients.
