We recently connected with Yuzeli Quiroz and have shared our conversation below.
Yuzeli, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Photography was first a hobby for me which then turned to be an outlet for unexplainable creativity. Knowing what I know now, I would not have spent a lot of money on unnecessary equipment. Having a single light (ie: speedlight), a decent camera, 2 128gb SD cards, 2 camera batteries, are enough to create beautiful photos.
A skill that is most essential in my opinion is thinking outside the box. Obstacles that I personally encountered are, lack of studio space (I don’t own a studio), money, not having models or someone to photograph right away, not having enough time in the day, not knowing that I could schedule a test photo session with a local modeling agency in order to have access to their models, and not knowing that there is a photography community almost in every state.
Yuzeli, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In high school, I took a photography class and instantly fell in love with the process of creating and developing my own photograph. However, I never pursued it, instead, I was invested in the evolution of IT processes. After hitting my early thirties, I had an early midlife crisis. The thought of retirement started invading my mind so I decided to focus on a hobby that I could start early and be a pro by retirement. So I chose photography. I loved everything about taking photos as a hobby, it was and is still fun. Then, it evolved into what is now, my current photography business. Yuzeli Q Photography specializes in fashion and portrait photography. The problems I faced and found solutions for is lighting. Understanding how light spreads is very important in this field.
As of today, I can confirm that I’ve never been most proud of myself for being courageous enough to start planning for a happy retirement and beyond, for being determined to learn photography techniques, for being a career bridge for some clients and models who I’ve photographed. My photography mission is to create images that empower, that creates curiosity, that is clean, that is bold, and unique.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I want to say what helped build my reputation within my market is being consistent in my work along with my personality.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Everyone has a journey. If there is someone struggling to begin a new journey, I say to take it because you will never know if it worked out or not until you commit to it. You will see doors will shut but also new ones will open.
