We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yuri Byun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yuri below.
Hi Yuri, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Yes, I am happy as an artist.
Before I had 3D artist as my job title, I just thought about it or dreamt about it, not really seriously picturing how it actually would be. Now I’ve been working in the commercial industry for about 4 years so far and I can tell you a few things about this job.
What I’ve been focusing on or practicing before I got into this field was only practicing ” how to make my artwork beautiful,” or ” How I can learn this and that crazy skill set.” Of course, those are very important abilities to have to become an artist.
However, another important side and very charming side of this job that many people miss out on is ” collaboration ” and ” communication. ”
You cannot work alone. You always need to grow together with the studio and projects! During that process, you will notice how important and big the impact those tiny little conversations will have on your artwork. In the end, you will be able to realize your artwork is already stepped up.
I’ve seen my progress and noticed my growth throughout my career, and I am very excited to see how much I could evolve more from my current version of myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello Canvas Subscribers!
I am 3D Artist Yuri Byun who was born and raised in Seoul and currently actively working in the Los Angeles Area.
Currently, I am a new employee at TikTok in the LIVE Gift Design team where design stickers that TikTok users can purchase and send to the streamers. Since I love Characters and eye candy designs, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to learn more about what designs draw more attention from audiences and make profits.
Previously I worked at a Production company called The Mill, which has amazing teamwork and such talented people. At The Mill Design team, they have Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Nike, Amazon, etc. as clients. And since The Mill is known for such a Hugh VFX talent, They do a lot of Live-action commercials as well. Recently Benefit Fanfest Mascara commercial was released which the mill directed, which I am very happy about.
I was able to collaborate with many artists in The Mill, and everyone there was very sweet and talented. Over there, People are very eager to create their own personal projects as well as collaborate all together among coworkers, which I love so much.
Wherever I belong, what I am chasing as a 3D designer is “Make them smile through my visual language” It’s very simple, but always, that’s all I want.
And let’s connect! Email me if you have any question :)
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Initially, my major was actually Ceramics. On top of that, I’ve been playing with 3D software along with the game called “Sims”. Those young days’ experiences and my major brought me the idea to study 3D animations. I started studying Maya and My passion for 3D design started.
I was doing research, and realized to seek more opportunities in the future, it would be better to start my study in the US. Ended up being in NYC to study Computer Arts in the School of Visual Arts, Afterwards, I got accepted to the Brand New School based in LA. That’s how all my career started.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to grow together with fellow artists. I don’t really feel the fulfillment from self-growth only. It’s always nice to see other people grow together with me and step a little more forward.
I’m always trying to share my knowledge If I can, and trying to ask to share their wisdom from coworkers if they are doing such an amazing job. I think that’s how our industry can get bigger and lavishing at the end as well.
