We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yunqi Yang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yunqi below.
Yunqi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up surrounded by my grandparents, particularly my grandfather, a Chinese water-ink painter, instilled in me a deep-rooted passion for art from an early age. This familial influence has shaped my artistic journey, becoming a significant part of my identity. The subtle yet pervasive impact of my grandfather’s artistic spirit has been a constant undercurrent, guiding me as an artist.
Engaging in the process of creating art, especially evident in the development of my flower-themed paintings, transcends the act of mere visual expression. It serves as a therapeutic outlet, offering a profound form of self-care and stress relief that significantly contributes to my overall well-being. The rhythmic strokes and intricate details in my artworks reflect not only aesthetic considerations but also a mindful journey towards mental and emotional balance.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Yunqi Yang, a visual designer and multidisciplinary artist who also cares about environmental issues. Art, for me, is more than a creative pursuit—it is a wellspring of inspiration that ripples into various aspects of my life. The influence of art extends beyond the canvas, affecting my decision-making, problem-solving approaches, and even shaping my personal style. This interconnectedness highlights the profound impact that the artistic process has on shaping my perspective and contributing to my holistic growth.
In the realm of art, I find a sanctuary—a place where reality fades, and imaginative worlds unfold. It offers a haven for exploration, fostering a sense of wonder that transcends the constraints of daily life. This escape into the realms of creativity provides not only solace but also a boundless space for innovation and self-discovery.
Just as my grandfather’s paintings conveyed stories through ink strokes, I too recognize the narrative power of art. Each piece I create tells a unique story, conveying messages that resonate with individuals and contributing to a broader problem. Through my art, I aim to echo the tradition of storytelling within the visual realm, inviting viewers to connect with the tales embedded within the colors, shapes, and textures of my creations.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The ability to make a positive impact on society is a driving force behind my work. In my piece, ‘Utopian Garden,’ I aim to remind people of the dystopian reality that exists, highlighting a different environmental concern—digital pollution—which is subtly concealed within my works. The hyper-realistic aesthetic of my work intentionally exposes a crack in the façade of this so-called utopia garden, revealing an imperfect solution to the more familiar global crisis of environmental pollution and implying a more sinister underlying problem. Instead of living at the expense of nature, I prompt the question: Can humans coexist in harmony with nature?
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As an artist, you will undoubtedly encounter numerous instances where your work is subject to critique from others. These moments of evaluation and feedback are integral parts of the creative journey. Embracing such critiques allows for continuous growth and refinement of your artistic skills. Each piece of constructive criticism serves as a valuable opportunity to learn, adapt, and elevate your craft. It’s through these challenges and insights that you can forge a path toward artistic excellence, constantly evolving and shaping your unique artistic voice. Remember, the journey of an artist is not just about creating; it’s also about the resilience to face and learn from the perspectives of others, contributing to your ongoing development and the richness of your artistic expression.
