We were lucky to catch up with Yung Mono recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yung Mono, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Well my oldest brother went double platinum for producing the song Laffy Taffy, then my older brother had tracks that were running the battle grounds on the radio and eventually I felt like I needed to do music too. So I made my first track “I’m the Man Now” in like 2017 just for fun, and it got like 1000 plays in a few months. I thought that was dope so I was like why not drop another song(Check Up) and it got 1k in like a month. When I saw that I was hype so I recorded and dropped Griffin and it got 1k over night and I was shook. Next thing you know the Delta Sigma Fraternity at Kennesaw State University reached out to me and booked me for my first show.
Yung Mono, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So I go by Yung Mono and I make music. I was in just about every band imaginable from 2nd grade to my freshman year of college and one day I decided to rap and sing. I was always a music junkie making No Limit Soldiers imitation music videos in my garage with my brothers and singing in the church and school choirs and even rapping with my brothers in a few different churches. I have performed at venues like the Masquerade and Center Stage since then with my own music.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing people that have no clue who I am or never heard my music before vibing to it. I have opened for a few different artists and it blows my mind when I perform a song and see someone I have never seen before vibing and having a good time to my music.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think support starts with the people closest to you. I have friends that will wear my songs out and others that have no clue that I make music. If you have a homie that is doing something creative, the best thing you can do for them is support and give honest opinions.
