Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yulitzin Alvarez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yulitzin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
[\As a daughter of immigrant parents working in the entertainment industry, I hope to bring inspiration and accessibility to others like me. I started doing hair and makeup because it was the only thing I though I knew how to do, not knowing how much representation and cultural understanding is necessary. I found a great successful career touring with different international tours. I also learned that not everyone has the knowledge to take care of their own hair, that has become something of my mission. All my years of problem solving and creative thinking has made me the experienced artist I am today. My goals still include learning new things and finding new ways to enjoy doing what I love. Hair and makeup to me is art on each person I work on, from everyday looks to a character on stage or in film.

Yulitzin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a young artist who had no clue what she wanted to do, I went to beauty school and really enjoyed learning, my parents where very supportive even when they did not know how to help me, because choosing to work in the industry isn’t really how it happens. If you do not know anyone in the industry as was my case, I happen to fall into it. Sometimes I think if I could do anything els, that might be easier. My biggest accomplishments have come from saying yes, being the only of me in the room. It start with a yes, being a key artist to anyone who would let me, and even the part that feel like failures have taught me. In this moment that we live in culture and art can bring people to a better place, the ability to represent my culture in places we have not been seen before is a celebration for me and the people around me. things that I live by : Self care and accessibility. Knowing how to help someone find the right products for hair types to the right type of budget. To working on set with the pressure of the job and finding solution all while sharing space with others on set is something I proud of.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn was that somethings are going to feel like a failure, and it will take some time to just enjoy what it was.
I worked on something that I had no idea how big it would get. In the process of getting it together I though I had the right help in my team. Not realizing that I was not being set up to succeed until I was in the moment. I did an entire film not having g control of my own department and that had its own challenges. I had to make peace with the fact that it wasn’t going to be what I wanted it. I learned that when I have a though I should not doubt my self, no matter what or who try to make you doubt yourself. It takes many people to make something like a film happen, one thing can affect many , the ability to do hair or makeup is not the only thing being about being an artist. To anyone thinking they want to do this for a living: know that it requires as much to do with working well with others, working under pressure and never letting doubt take over.
I have other intenses where I knew I could make it the best I could, I used all my resources to make it go amazingly and even then we had to work together to make it the best, in the end the actors I worked with really appreciate the time and effort they saw being done. After the fact: having conversations about it was their favorite wig the ever had makes it feel like a success for me.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my job as an artist is accessibility: the ability to help someone express a part of them self others cannot necessary see from the outside. That goes for both actor to everyday people. I get to talk to someone ask them what they are looking to express in them self, come up with a look just for them. I get to work with brands and models in a campaign to be part of the art through hair and makeup . My biggest inspiration is my culture. I get to use that in my profession . In many cases I get to be someone who understands their hair struggle, who has never had a professional help them get the right tools for what they need. I can say that the life my parents gave me is what lead to my professional career, That is my biggest success.
