We recently connected with Yulian Monroy and have shared our conversation below.
Yulian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As an interior designer, I often found it challenging to source the perfect art piece that truly aligned with the design vision I had for a space. The right shapes, colors, and mood were often missing, and that disconnect could compromise the overall harmony of the interior. So, I decided to take a leap and start creating custom art myself—pieces specifically designed to blend seamlessly with each project’s unique aesthetic. This approach allows me to ensure that every artwork not only enhances the space but also feels like a natural extension of the design itself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
These custom art pieces are available as part of my interior design services, ensuring a fully integrated and cohesive design experience for my clients. However, my work isn’t limited to my own projects—I’m also open to collaborations with other interior designers and architects. If you’re looking for bespoke artwork that aligns perfectly with your design vision—whether it’s through color, form, or overall atmosphere—I can help bring that vision to life with tailored art that complements and elevates the space.
You can easily reach me for commissions or collaborations through my Instagram account: @monroydesignstudio. I’m always excited to connect with fellow creatives and contribute to unique, design-driven environments.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to express myself through shapes, colors, and textures. It’s a deeply personal and fulfilling process—one that goes beyond aesthetics. In my work, this creative expression becomes a bridge between architecture, interior design, and art. I see each project as a composition, where every element has a role to play.
The ultimate goal is to create spaces that speak for themselves—spaces where art blends effortlessly with furniture, lighting, functionality, and décor. When everything comes together in harmony, the result is more than just a beautiful room; it’s an environment that feels alive, intentional, and perfectly balanced.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an emerging artist, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is finding my voice—and making it heard—especially in a vibrant and competitive market like Miami. It can be overwhelming to carve out a space that feels authentic in a sea of creative talent. But resilience, for me, has come through persistence and learning—especially through my mistakes.
As a plastic artist, experimenting with different techniques is essential, but it also means things don’t always go as planned. Early on, I realized that every “mistake” was actually a lesson in disguise. That’s why I started keeping a mental “Mistakes Book.” Any time something goes wrong—like an acrylic paste not drying properly or a color not blending the way I imagined—I log it mentally: “Mistake #48 – do not blend acrylic paste with mineral oil.”
It’s a lighthearted way to stay grounded, but also a reminder that growth comes from trial, error, and the courage to keep creating despite setbacks. Each mistake brings me closer to mastering my medium and developing a style that is truly my own.
