Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yulia Arispe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yulia, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Happy Choice Films came from my social media business, Happy Choice Life. As positive as it sounds and as per the laws of science, there is no light without darkness, and the name comes from many years of hardships and self-struggles. Until one day, I realized that happiness is a choice. We are born to be happy; we are supposed to be happy, but for some reason, we are often drowning in sadness, discontent, and conformism, which often comes from the fear of change. I have observed people being stuck on jobs where they felt miserable but were afraid of looking for a better option. I have listened to people complaining about their lives and rejecting any given solution.
Despite all hardships, I always have been a dreamer and held my hopes high, and this is how I took my first step. It was a considerable risk, and I was extremely afraid, but staying in the same place was not an option anymore, so I jumped just to discover that, in the end, everything works out because by eliminating negativity, we can focus on other things that guide us to success.
The second time I took a risk, it was easier and later became a habit. And that’s when I came to the realization that we make our destiny and we make our happiness by making the right choices.
when time came for me to choose name for my business Happy Choice Life came naturally. Happy Choice FIlms came in later I mostly focus on films that talk about social issues, films that bring deep messages to the audience, they all are filed with hopes to some day change the world for better.
Yulia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was little I was a storyteller. I traveled a lot with my grandparents and we would visit medieval castles and I would imagine the whole movie happening there. Later in life I focused my creativity on marketing and design as filmmaking was not even an option then but later when we (my husband and I) immigrated from Venezuela, life guided us both to film. As my husband was working in a film school I was growing my social media presence and with that growth came responsibilities and a need to be on camera and talk publicly at events. I was very shy and conscious of my accent and to overcome this I went to take some classes at the film school. I ended up graduating with a degree in acting and film. By the time I graduated (during covid) I knew acting was helpful but that not what I really wanted to do. I found myself always looking for the business side of the films and that’s how I discovered the producing. we moved to LA and I enrolled in NYFA in masters Producing for film and TV program. I realized I have a special talent for producing and all my experience in business just was adding to it. I still keep m Instagram focused on what makes me happy (mostly food and travels) and occasionally drop a post from set. I love taking a film from its early days, taking the script, seeing how we can tell this story. preparing the budget and business strategy, helping young filmmakers navigate the ocean of legalities and organization. I enjoy the process of creating the product that tells the story and love the idea of being able to change people’s minds, perception and create awareness towards important matters.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The most dramatic change for me after moving from Miami to LA was the discovery of collaboration and mentorship that I found in the industry here. Miami has been a hostile world with a very competitive and closed mindset. So when I moved to LA, and one of my teachers told me to reach out to people on LinkedIn and ask them to share their knowledge with me, I felt insecure about it. Who will want to sit and spend time talking to you and teaching you the trade secrets they learned through the years? However, I always try to listen to other people’s advice, and I jumped on and reached out to a person, and to my surprise, she accepted a coffee with me. We ended up spending 3,5 hours talking about many things I learned from her, and I learned not to be afraid and that here in LA, the industry has a very different mindset.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
It might sound crazy, childish, or pretentious, but I want to make the world a better place. If, through my films, I can change one person’s mind, it is already a significant accomplishment for me. If I could have the audience leave the theater and spread the message and change little things in their daily lives, that would make me happy.
