Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yules. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yules, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I bought a cheap mixer with my friend Ajency at the time and we just started messing around with it with no real direction. Eventually real DJ’s and friends who new how to spin would come over and work with us whether it was Ekonovah, Elwer, Chris Tiano, etc.. Eventually started to pick it up a bit and began to continue learning from Youtube videos. Your first few gigs you play are always the best teachers though.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Yules was born in 2018 from a love of dance music and being constantly surrounded by other DJs and Artists. My first gig was in a warehouse in Downtown Phoenix at 3am after Drezo performed at the Van Buren. It was a small but fun gig and my close friends came out. I had been practicing at Guitar Center the night before until close just to get myself ready enough. DJing just takes time like anything else and if you put in enough hours it eventually starts to flow.
I really think what seperates myself is not taking it too seriously, keeping the music first, and most of all having FUN. So many people get so wrapped up in things around the music that aren’t FUN.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Any artist not actively pursuing NFTs and getting involved with web3 as a whole will be a dinosaur in the years to come. Adapt or die essentially and if history has proven one thing technology and advancements wins time and time again.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yules exist to show all the other DJs out there who ask for handouts that anyone can do this. More DJs are asking for favors and haven’t even taken the time to build their brand, network, build their press kits, websites, color palletes, and most importantly a Mission Statement. Everyone just skips these things and goes straight to playing any local gig they get their hand on.
Yules was created to show you that if my not so smart self can do it then so can you.
I’ve been fortunate enough to play in multiple cities at Venues like Avalon Hollywood and Shady Park and opened up for multiple National and International headliners simply by taking the time to build a small brand that I really do on the side here. Yules exist to portray the ideal of “No one cares work harder” which is a mindset that’s lost among so many chasing the dream in this industry.
