We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yulanda Yo-Rong Shieh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yulanda Yo-Rong below.
Yulanda Yo-Rong, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think having an open mind and being resilient are important. Every opportunity is special and you don’t know where it would lead you. Trust your gut and do your best with what you have. Be kind to your collaborators, make friends not enemies.
Things don’t always work out but don’t give up! It’s part of the process, try to learn from it. There’s a message in everything that happened.

Yulanda Yo-Rong, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a set designer for film and theater, I’m interested in visual storytelling and creating space. Born and raised in Taiwan, I had my undergrad in theater and worked in the film industry in Asia for a couple of years before moving to the US for grad school. Looking back, I think it’s the love of listening to stories as a kid that got me here eventually. On top of the narrative works, I also design for music videos, commercials, interiors, exhibitions, events…etc, anything space/visual related I’m passionate about.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Every project is so different and unique, you are never doing the same thing, and you learn a little bit more about yourself and the world around you each time you dedicate yourself to a project. Also the people you meet along the way!

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The uncertainties, it’s hard to know where, when, what your next project is. It’s scary sometimes, but it’s also the nature of being a freelancer doing creative work. Taking care of yourself and enjoying life while not working are part of the work as well.
