Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to YUJIN BPMs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi YUJIN, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 15, I decided that I wanted to become a professional musician. While in high school, I started composing music and selling it at school. I used a 4-track tape recorder to record drums, bass, guitar, piano, synthesizer, and vocals, and edited them myself. I also created the cover art and designed the flyers on my own. Since then, I have been enjoying self-producing. After high school, I signed a contract with a major record label. However, I started feeling uncomfortable and resistant to having record companies and other people promote me. Eventually, I formed a band and launched an independent record label with them. It seems I have always preferred to style myself that way. Even now, I strive to do as much as possible myself, such as recording and creating music videos etc.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a musician who plays over 20 different instruments, sings, and composes. Additionally, I am a producer/DJ, creating electro tracks and performing with them. As an artist, I also produce music videos and visual movies for other artists, individuals, and companies. I have had the opportunity to perform all over the world, including cities like Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Niseko, and more, which fills me with pride. My versatility allows me to play, create, and perform various genres of music. I believe that it is this combination of skills that sets me apart from others.
I started the electronic sound project “BPMs” in Los Angeles in 2012. The beats per minute (BPM) in a track affect humans both physiologically and emotionally, causing changes in the body as well as the subconscious. In 2015, I moved to London to further research the BPM of dance music. Then, I began to notice the variations in beats between European and American dance music, as well as the differences in BPM between House and Techno. In 2019, during my time in Berlin, I discovered and became immediately fascinated by the powerful impact of 138 BPM in the Berlin music scene. In underground clubs, people danced continuously from Thursday night to Tuesday morning, propelled by a non-stop stream of Hardcore Techno–all at this same BPM. After returning from Germany in 2021, I joined the music label “Space Anemone” and released Acid Techno tracks from Los Angeles. One of them, titled “ACID-19”, was produced at 138 BPM. In 2022, I was honored as an Inaugural Mini-Residency Honorable Mention artist by the label, and they requested me to create a new music video for my Trance Techno track “RAVE MARIA”. I decided to undertake this project in London, selecting locations such as Brick Lane, Wembley, and Canary Wharf to capture the different atmospheres of the city in one film. The music video was published this year.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The proliferation of the Internet and subscription services is currently revolutionizing the advertising landscape for music, art, and entertainment. Targeted advertising has become commonplace, and the gap between artists/creators and consumers has considerably diminished. This shift has brought great convenience to both parties and represents the essence of how people originally enjoyed music and art. Moving forward, I believe it will be crucial for record labels and advertising agencies to enhance the precision of targeted advertising and harness the power of AI, rather than relying solely on conventional methods.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to create works that leave a lasting impact in history for as long as possible. To achieve this, I place a high value on the perfection of my creations and strive to ensure they are understood by as many people as possible. I believe that artists /creators have the ability to enrich people’s spirits and shape the future, and I consider this to be my life’s mission.
