We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Yueying Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Yueying, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
When I was a primary school student, I found expression through drawing, filling the blank spaces of draft paper and textbooks with my unbridled and emotional thoughts which I communicated with the world. It wasn’t until high school, however, that I truly began to understand the depth and breadth of artistic expression. Immersing myself in the works of masters like Lucian Freud, I found myself drawn to the intricate brushstrokes between colors, shapes, and emotions on canvas. The allure of art grew, and I embarked on a journey to refine my craft under the guidance of professional artists. As I came to university, Chinese painting, with its rich history and profound symbolism, captivated my imagination like nothing before. It was here that I chose to pursue Chinese painting as my undergraduate major, a decision that would profoundly influence the trajectory of my artistic journey. In its graceful lines and subtle brushwork, I found the perfect medium to explore the contours of my own artistic style. Each stroke of the brush was a revelation, a testament to the power of simplicity and restraint in conveying profound truths. Yet, my artistic odyssey did not end there. Driven by a thirst for new horizons, I ventured across oceans to America, a land where Western art beckoned with its own unique allure. Here, amidst the vibrant tapestry of cultures and ideas, I sought to broaden my artistic horizons even further. Enrolling in the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I embarked on a dual journey, pursuing MFA and MA degrees in Painting and Illustration. At first glance, these two disciplines may seem worlds apart, each with its own set of techniques and traditions. Yet, to me, they were simply different facets of the same creative prism. In my painting major, I delved deep into the complexities of the human form, grappling with questions of identity, gender, and belonging. Through the medium of oil painting, watercolor, acrylic, and printmaking, I explored the boundless possibilities of artistic expression, each brushstroke a testament to the depths of human experience. Meanwhile, in the realm of illustration, I embraced the digital frontier, harnessing the power of computers, tablets, and cutting-edge software to bring my stories to life. From whimsical characters to epic landscapes, each illustration was a canvas upon which I painted the tapestry of my imagination, blending elements of fantasy and reality in a seamless dance of creativity.
Throughout my journey, one question echoed incessantly: how to balance these two seemingly disparate worlds of painting and illustration? Yet, to me, the answer was never about balance—it was about integration, about weaving the threads of these diverse disciplines into a coherent artistic tapestry. For me, art is a lifelong journey of self-discovery and expression. From the quiet corridors of Chinese painting to the bustling streets of American academia, each step of my journey has been a testament to the transformative power of art. And as I look to the future, I do so with a sense of boundless optimism, knowing that with each brushstroke, I am not just creating art—I am creating a legacy, a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an illustrator and painter, I am deeply immersed in the world of visual storytelling, constantly seeking new avenues to express my creativity and share my narrative with the world. Currently, my focus lies on concept illustration within the realm of gaming, a dynamic and ever-evolving field that allows me to blend my passion for art with my love for interactive storytelling. What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to exploring diverse techniques and mediums to breathe life into my artistic visions. I take immense pride in my ability to adapt and learn, always pushing the boundaries of my craft. For instance, I am currently delving into the intricacies of Maya and ZBrush, eager to unravel the complexities of 3D modeling and animation. By expanding my skill set, I aim to deepen my understanding of visual storytelling and enrich the worlds I create.
My journey as an artist has been marked by a relentless pursuit of innovation and self-discovery. Whether I’m wielding a paintbrush or navigating digital terrain, I am driven by a boundless curiosity and a thirst for creative exploration. Through my works, I strive to challenge perceptions, provoke introspection, and ignite conversations that transcend language and cultural barriers.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is resonance. I enjoy expressing my story and understanding through my artwork. As a positive individual, I strive to create pieces that resonate with audiences, sparking emotions and igniting thought. Witnessing others connect with my work on a personal level is deeply gratifying, as it signifies a shared understanding and appreciation for the human experience. In fostering this resonance, I find fulfillment in knowing that my art has the power to inspire, uplift, and unite individuals across diverse backgrounds and cultures.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I see NFTs as a convenient avenue to sell artwork, offering artists a novel way to showcase and monetize their creations in the digital realm. However, the rise of NFTs also underscores the importance of prioritizing internet safety and security measures. As the market evolves, it’s crucial for artists and collectors alike to exercise caution and diligence in navigating this burgeoning space. By embracing responsible practices and promoting transparency, we can harness the potential of NFTs while safeguarding against potential risks and ensuring the integrity of digital assets and transactions.
